    Default 1st Americana

This is my first Americana, the wood is Syrian Batu that I purchased off Soundman. Finished with EEE x 2, and ShellaWax x 2,.

That looks great Amos. I'm just waiting on some pen kits from GPW to try out the Syrian Batu I purchased from Soundman.

Rather than post a new thread, here are two more SYRIAN BATU Americana, one has contrasting grain , bit like Sassafras. The wood is easy to work with also. Amos

Yes, have to agree with you about these kits DJ, I may try another with just plain straight turning rather than curves. I happened to get 5 of those kits and need to use them, maybe a different choice of wood, may look better?! Amos

Yeh I think there is too much gold in the americana for the dark woods... They look better in red acrillic and in some of the paler timbers.

I recon the best pen for SB is going to be the black titainium seirea.

I think the dark timbers would be better suited to a chrome or silver pen or a gold pen with mimimal metal.

    cheers

I don't like the Americanas. At all. [shrug]

I think there's just too much metal and the wood tends to look like a tacky afterthought, except for some of the blander pale woods. Light acrylics and some bone and horn look alright in them though... best of all is bone/horn that has been engraved. But that's not my forte and I've no great desire to start.

    Just my opinion, of course.

    Oh yeah? OH YEAH???

    well ...
well .. YOUR FEET STINK! So there!

Being from the US and never having seen a pen like that before, I wonder which America they were talking about when they named it.
Wish I could see the wood better, it looks like it has a nice flair to it. Nice pen, nice job.

Speaking of bone/ivory .. I've been scouring the web for recipes for casein formaldehyde, but coming up blank. I'd like to try making a blank so I can turn it .. fake ivory. I've got this ebony blank that is too short for a pen,and I'm thinking 'inlay'.

wonder if the ebony would just tear out of the casein, though.

I think they use the ol' "Dart in a Dictionary" trick to choose names.

STIRLO! Where are you!? From memory, he was experimenting with casein at school. But now that I think on it, he has been quiet for quite some time...
