    Default 1st Cigar style.

I finally got a little time and finished off my 1st cigar pen. Tony (Perfect Pens) talked me into trying it so i grabbed a couple of kits of him and I finally got around to it. I used the 5min epoxy to glue the tubes, 3 coats of thin and 3 coats of medium CA. No idea what the wood is, came from MapleMan.
Still having trouble with the lateral wobble on the lathe which made turning the blank down a little difficult. I have mentioned this in the general turning forum HERE and am looking for a little help from a Brissy / Wynnum / Manly local if possible !

Here is the cigar anyway ... I am still having a little trouble with pitting in the CA finish (might be able to pick it in the 2nd photo), the medium just doesn't seem to be curing properly even after a hit of accelerator perhaps this is part of the problem ??

looks good regardless, i would say it is Queensland Maple, thats a guess of course

i don't accelerator with my CA finishes, i think i am marginally allergic to it, i use a BLO/CA finish and only use Med CA

    all the best

I only used accelerator on the last coat but it didnt seem to have an effect, plus the previous coats of medium CA took well over the 15-20 sec to cure. Perhaps the glue is off but its a fairly new bottle and I store it in the fridge ... oh well ... trial and error I guess

    That's a really nice pen.

I have only 1 thing to say about cigars. CHECK YOUR BUSHINGS . . . . . . . . . TWICE. My 3rd cigar pen is actually a key ring because it uses 10mm tubes. I have another that I'll build up with CA one of these days so it will be the right diameter on the right end.

As far as the pitting, it may vert well be the accelerator. I no longer use accelerator to speed up CA when finishing. If I did production work, I'd probably use it, but since I only make pens for a hobby, I don't see the need.

Thanks, I am really happy with the look of the pen. You need to look pretty closely to see the pitting in the finish and I will be trying without accelerator next time.
I checked and rechecked my bushings to make sure I had them the right way round, I even used a set of calipers to measure them to make sure the smaller end was on the right way !

Lookin good Tim. I know after doing a hundred or so slims and streamlines when I first started making pens , that moving on to sierras and cigars they felt like poles in the hand hehe, but you get used to the different sizes as you continue the journey, CA seems to be different to different folks, and different locations ,temperatures play a part as well ,once you have it worked out for your own situation it will be easier to get consistant results ,but even when you think you have it down pat, there will still be the odd occasion that you just have to start over Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!
