1st and Probably Last Acrylic
Hey Guys,
I have made my first Acrylic pen. I made two today but the other one was a failure, I went too skinny and the brass showed through. I have decided that I wont be making any more (at this stage), I have just sorted a place in town that can Laser Etch some wooden pens, I will be getting some done with my business name and also some other business people who have been supporting me over the last couple of years. I am placing an order with Timberbits. Get ready Dave.

Acrylic Turning
Hey There,
I wont be doing any acrylics in the near future, to quote and Old timer, "If god ment Boats to be made out of Fibreglass (Plastic) he would have made FibreGlass (plastic) trees." I have to make about 5 more Acrylics for MIL, 2x SIL and 2x Sisters, then I'll be doing mainly SheOak and Burls, I have a quantity of both, also if I come across some Tassie Oak with some features I will make a few of them. Always on the Lookout for special timbers, The Boat yard I am working in, has always got something different going on and the Shipwright wont miss a couple of little bits now and again. I have my eye on some American Cherry at the moment.
Watch this Spot.

Looks good to me, a lot of acrylic blanks get transparent at finished thickness and the tube showing through is an issue. To combat this most pen turners will paint either the tube or the inside of the blank once its drilled. I prefer wood but always have a few acrylics in the pen case as the punters seem to like them a lot.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

All my sales to the girls at work have been resin pens so far. Women just seem to like the bright colours compared to a manly wood texture.
I'm trying to make all my resin blanks these days so that they are as opaque as possible because I know from personal experience how annoying the show-through problem is. A little hard with the pearlex pigments, but I'm getting there and have had several successes lately. The plain opaque pigments such as my Lava Flow blanks have no requirement at all to paint the tubes, so it is possible to produce blanks that avoid this problem.
