Blackwood
I made these out of the waste of some blackwood slabs I bought from MampleMan last year. I'm pretty happy with them but I think I'll try staining with some danish oil next time. I put some danish on something else I made from those slabs and it brings out the grain all spectacular.

Nice work!!!
As you get further into this addiction you will notice that some timbers that
look great as boards or beams because of their grain, ar not so special in small
doses.
In general terms I find blackwood to be one of these. I have some pieces here
that will look great as peppermills but ordinary as pens. Same goes for some
other timbers I have stored away.

Don't mean all blackwood MM. I have a quantity here that will come up trumps as peppermills, bowls, lidded boxes
and so on,. As pens I'm not so positive.
Red cedar is an interesting timber. Looks good in larger dose but rarely in small doses like pens.

I have had some very ordinary timber, sorry not sure what it was but I turned quite a lot of it into pens. When I started with the CA it was just so instead of starting again I used Ubeaut dye. Once it was dried I sanded it back leaving the dye in the grain. Then finished with CA.

Here they are again, this time with a third cut from the same bit of timber. This one, at the bottom, I put some danish oil on beneath the ca. It is quite a bit darker in real life, this photo doesn't really show that. It does show the big flaw in the middle one which was in the wood. It is filled up with ca and smooth to touch.
