My parcel from Nancy Laird arrived in the post yesterday.

Great pen with a nice box engraved with my name. Also in the box was a large amount of pen blanks with some timber I have never seen before.

Thank you Nancy for a wonderful swap.

    Hey David,

Very nice haul there, some interesting looking blanks, the box looks interesting.
The pen is pretty cool also.

I have received several PMs and emails from people that haven't received a pen from their swap partners, and in some cases haven't heard from their swap partner at all.

Would those people that haven't sent a pen to their partner yet, for wahtever reason, please contact their swap partner and at least give a sign of life.

We all get caught up in the day to day things and sometimes making a pen for a pen swap is not our top priority, however it would be nice to at least let your partner know what is going on and that you intend to fulfill your part of the bargain.

    Thanks for your cooperation.

My partner, clinch, has notified me that he has received my pen, so I guess it is OK now to post some pictures of the pen he sent me.

    Chris tells me:

the kit is a chrome baron. The wood is Black Walnut laminated with a Box Elder Burl stripe. The metal in the lamination is aluminum from a soda pop can.

It was the first time I've tried to make a segmented pen using aluminum and I think it turned out really well.

and I agree with him. Very nice result, excellent result even if it wasn't his first segmented pen.

The fit and finish on the pen is excellent as well and I am certainly happy with my pen.

Chris also sent me a few blanks and I'm sure they will be put to good use.

Here is the pen I sent to my partner, clinch.

It is a modified Executive roller ball, ends are the primer ends of .308 rifle cartridges, finished off with some brass finials I turned up. The blank is the bark from a Red Ironbark.

    Also sent him some blanks.

I just recieved my wonderful swap pens from my partner William ( wdcav1952 ).
The pics may not show the depth of shine on these, but trust me, it's amazing!!!
They are finished in poly ( and I always thought CA gave the best shine)
Cav sent me two closed ended pens, one is Snakewood and the other is Kauri with a wormy desk stand base. Included in the box was a great piece of Axis antler and a 350yr old piece of White Ash that has some great figure to it.

I have never been dissapointed by any of the swaps I've taken part in and this is certainly no exception!!! Thank you William!!!

Since Gerry (Gezawa) should have received my package by now I will post up what he sent to me for the swap. The box is finger-jointed spotted gum with a York gum burl top. Amazing workmanship all around and the top has to be seen to really appreciate it. The finish is Arvos Kunos oil and really shines.
The matching pen and letter opener are made from York gum burl. Very well turned - the fit and finish are first class. CA finish on both. Smooth as glass.
A nice selection of blanks came as well. A couple that I've never heard of. I can't wait to try out the ones called "Wandu". They look special. Thank you, Gerry, for everything.

Well, that may be. But I know it looks like some pretty special timber. I just hope Gezawa has received my package and will post soon. It's still the 31st here but not there...

WANDOO is the correct spelling I believe.
Certainly is, AKA white gum here in West Aus. This an extremely tough timber - this is the wood I learnt to split for firewood as a kid on our farm - thought jarrah was a real breeze to split by comparison!!!!

    FYI

"Uses of wandoo have been mainly for heavy and light construction, poles, sleepers, and flooring. The bark and wood were harvested in the past because they contain commercial quantities of tannins, the extraction of which was once a medium-sized industry in the wandoo area.

The timber is difficult to work because of its high density but machines to a smooth surface. The grain is interlocked or wavy and careful drying is required to avoid checks and end splits."
