Mine is on it's way. I was teamed up with WDCav1952, who I know is a dentist, so I made this. It's a copy of an 18th Century Dental Tooth Key.
A scary tool that they used to rip out teeth without painkillers!!!

    It's like Christmas in Feb

Outstanding pen skiprat. Lucky you didn't get me as a swap partner. I'm a farmer, you would had to have made me a horse.

    Default Swap Pen

    Hey There,

Have made contact and I'm ready to send my pen to the US of A, The pen is Salmon Gum Burl wrapped around a Gold Junior Victor Rollerball kit from Timberbits. There will also be some Aussie timber blanks in the package, as I am told that there will be some American timber blanks in the return package. Thanks to all those involved in organizing the swap, and I hope that there are some more in the future.

My first attempt at making my pen went really badly...

I had planned on making a Closed end burl pen out of Horistes burl. The idea was to have the naturally spiky bit of the burl as the end cap which I though would be at least interesting, if nothing else.

I grabbed my chunk or burl and worked out there were exactly 2 bits I could cut out of it that were long enough to do what I wanted, so I cut them out and proceeded to very carefully drill them out to the cap size, which is about 2mm larger than the barrel size My first attempt at turning it down resulted in more blowout than I've had before on a blank. That Horistes is cranky stuff

I'm now doing a standard pen out of the same burl.

    Cheers,
    Dave

That horistes is quite a hard burl , I find with burls in general you really need a good glueup to stick the wood to the tubes (epoxy or araldite) with the burls they have no regular grain pattern to tie them together ,so individual sections can pop very easily thin CA is also a help during the turning process as it will wick into the timber and make it a bit more co-hesive , even then some of the burls on the bigger kits have very little wall thickness when finished ,so sanding the last 1-2 millimetres is playing safe as well hehe.
Its all part and parcel of the joys of our addiction hehe, cheers ~ John

I think it's normal to let the recipient of the swap pen to post a piccie once they recieve it , keeps the surprise factor in play hehe. Cheers ~ John
