    Default 2nd and 3rd pens

I took a quick trip to town this morning for some fine grit sandpaper and some finish and then I was back in the shed for some more pen turning.

Pen number 2 is Wenge. I looked it up and apparently it's a bit harder to turn and has some big pores. It ended up with some big divets in it.

Pen 3 is Brazilwood and I'm very happy with how it turned out. Very smooth. It is to be a birthday present for my sister-in-law so I tried to give it a more feminine shape.

I just bought 50 blanks from MapleMan so that should keep me going for a while.

Probably because I didn't make it feminine like the other.

If the little chunks taken out are discovered when you have one or 2 mil to go, you could finish with sandpaper, should help remove the dips. Continue the good work, Amos

Sandpaper is a good way to finish off to get rid of the chips. Wenge is a nice timber but very small pits appear in every one of them - I suppose it is the grain. CA will fill them and hide them.

nice pens with some shape to give them character, well done

the other way to fill the holes is to put a few drops of CA on the sandpaper when sanding and the dust will set in the holes

if i am making a fairly dark wood pen then i have been known to keep some the dust from the sandpaper to use as filler on future pens, just fill the depresion with the dust add a drop of CA let it dry and Bobs your uncle

CA has many uses in the pen turning fraternity

    all the best

You should be proud of those two pens, they look pretty good.

The chips in the Wenge pen is all part of the learning process. Next time it starts to happen you will know to change your technique to compensate, or finish off with a coarser grade of sandpaper, then work your way through the grades to get a good finish. And as someone already said, CA is your friend in this situation.

I think a bit of curve in the Slimline barrels make a much nicer pen than straight barrels.
I dont make many Slimlines, but the ones I do make are almost all bought by females, so I make the shape to suit.

Yes a good effort on those, practice makes perfect and by the sound of it you will be getting plenty of practice.
