.308 and a couple of firsts
A couple of firsts for me, some of you may think, what? I never considered myself skillful enough in the soldering of tubes and the drilling of the projectiles. So I had an order for a .308 and this is what I came up with. I bought lengths of 7mm brass tubes from Carroll's, the .308's came from a police officer I know and the streamline kit from Timberbits. I normally use the nib from the kit, but was asked if I could make the nib from a .308 projectile. I cut the brass tube 10mm longer than the shell and solder the nib end in place and then trim flush. Sorry for the bad photo, it was done in a hurry, will take a better one later.
Cheers
Darren

Thats the first time I have seen a streamline centreband used between the shells, looks like its meant to be there.

Very Nice pen Darren I only have one sugestion for next time and that is when I do mine I make sure the projectile is in far enough so the serated bit around the projectile cannot be seen and then it will also fit and look much smarter.
just a sugestion
Cheers Ian

You are right the pen may look smarter if the projectile is fitted in so the serration is not showing, but was keeping it as true as possible to how an actual .308 looks when one is used for shooting and all photos and live .308's i have seen have the serration showing. It is a present for a friend who is a police officer. They are his spent .308 shells, and he is giving it to his daughter,s boyfriend who both are in the army together. So I thought to keep it as real as possible was best. Your suggestion is good and makes for a smoother pen and will look at that for the next one.
Cheers

Good job on the pen Darren
Not all .308 (or indeed other calibers) have the serrations. Indeed the 155gr 30cal projectiles I use don't have them at all, I agree with Ian and prefer the smoother, sleeker look of the projectiles without the serrations. I don't know why some projectiles have them and others don't
For the .308 I use the standard 50mm slimline tubes and for the .3006 and .270 I use the top tube from the Euro kit. They all need trimming back after soldering. The length of the tubes required depend on the length of the projecticle used, some projectiles are quite short, the 155g I use are fairly long.
I drill the Streamline centre bands to fit over the 7mm tubes and trim the tubes to sit flush with the centre band.

G'day Darren and all.
Is it correct to suggest the clip is of a model 94 Winchester?
Very nice pen mate, sort of brings the art of diplomacy and the power the firearm together.
Cheers Oddjob1
You know the power of the pen.

That looks very nice. Well done. May I ask what you use to pollish and finish please. Currently I am using a spray on brass protective coating, but it scratches easy. Would like to know a nice hard finish to put on my brass, copper aluminium pens I make.
