    Default Liquid Amber seed pod

After watching the recent Casting DVD I kept eyeing off the seed pods on the large liquid amber tree across the road. I gathered some up a couple of weeks ago and had a bash at casting them last weekend. This is the first pen made from that casting. The resin has been tinted blue with a few sparkly bits thrown in for good measure. There were a few flaws in the blank where the resin did not penetrate all the way down into the pod. Some of these were filled with the epoxy during glue up so you can see all the way down to the white painted tube, some filled up with dust duing sanding and I put some CA on and they looked alright. Other than over turning it slightly at the nib end I'm pretty happy with it. So the turned blank was sanded to 800, sealed with about 10 coats of thin CA and then MM all the way.

As always comments and critisims welcomed.

    cheers
    WH

ps - Neil I have a bag of these pods saved for you. I'll drop them off next time I'm down the coast.

Thats really wild looking love the contrast between the pod color and the casting....you might have found a new blank to cast up for sale, thats really eye catching.

Just back from holidays. The pen looks brilliant. The liquid amber seeds set in the blue resin really set it off. Great job with the casting.

You may have to wait until next winter now as they have finished for the year. The one over the raod from me drops about a trailer load of them each year, so there will be plenty for everyone

No I followed Neil's (Dai Sensei) instructions from the casting DVD and mixed them with resin before putting them in a mold and topping up with resin. When the block had cured I cut it up into pen sized blanks and turned as normal.
