    Default A problem

My good friend Funky sent me a nice gift a Beefwood pen some time ago FC tells me it has a CA finish.

In the last few days I have noticed one side of the wood has gone dull and often feels sticky, I have PM'd him to see if he knew what might be the problem.

Before I come into the office I always was my hands

Since last PM I recalled I had been using OrganOil Burnishing oil in the garage, yes as usual I washed up but residue may have soaked into my skin.

    Could this be the problem

Ca isn't soluble in OrganOil, so even if you got it on the outside wiping off should be the end of the problem.

If 'twas an oily wood that hadn't been wiped down with isopropyl alcohol or acetone or whatever before coating then the CA finish could lift and flake off, but that doesn't sound like what you're describing. Nor is Bloodwood typically oily.

    Dunno!

(Maybe you should spill some acetone/nail-polish remover nearby so we can all point the finger at that and say AHA!? )

Beefwood does have a habit of exuding a sticky gum after a bowl has been turned and sanded, have seen it on oner of my pens before sealing the surface. Where it is dull, is that where you have handled the pen when using it? some people have a natural acidic fingers and even wears through CA. It is hard to say, photos would show us more

Most certainly as Bdar says. The resin is the very reason I don't use the stuff unless someone actually requests it like the bowl on my website.

But that doesn't turn the CA "sticky." And there's a big difference between "sticky" and CA delaminating.

Unless FC had only given it a very, very thin coat which the resin could soak through? Which is easily done, it's often hard to tell how much is buffed off during polishing.

As has been said: pix would be helpful.

Skew Wheelin said it had gone dull not that it had de laminated. Thats why I thought of the acidic problems with the finish. I know that when I was doing only 3 to 5 coats the pen i was using did dull where I held it. If it is the case here that the CA has worn through then the beefwood will do it's thing

Dunno about that. The finish on that pen was unusually dull, got no idea why...Maybe I sanded right through the CA

Yep. What I meant was that any oils, etc. under the surface will cause a good coat of CA to delaminate, not "go sticky." Which is why I said that I didn't think that was the problem.

I'd automatically assumed that FC had given it a "good coating."

Yeah, it's possible. From what has been said, that sounds to be the most likely cause.

Unfortunately I've done the same more often than I'd like to admit; it's another reason I moved away from CA finishes.

Take the jam tart out of your top pocket Ray and your problem will be solved.
    Reality is no background music.

Looks like the typical worn thru the CA with the sandpaper.

I used to finish my CA pens with EEE, but it unfortunately hid the "worn thru" parts. Perhaps FC did the same?

I think I may have, but that doesn't explain why it'd be sticky
