    Default My Ability Questioned

Last Wednesday at my local guild, my ability as a wood turner was questioned buy a new member because his words were any monkey can make a pen and that my 5 grand champion awards that I have won was a fluke. He is a new member and has done a 4 week turning course. By this stage I was a tad off but apparently he has rubbed many people the wrong way. I know I don't have to prove myself but man I am going to enjoy doing this.

Six years ago I did my first modified Sierra out of Padauk but did not go all the way. Custom Sierra - International Association of Penturners Last Wednesday at my local guild, my ability as a wood turner was questioned buy a new member because his words were any monkey can make a pen and that my 5 grand champion awards that I have won was a fluke.

Edblysard did a lovely tutorial on his Sierra modification which was a good referral for me along the way in doing this one. Dorno converted it to a pdf which has been saved in my library. https://www.woodworkforums.com/attach...dification.pdf So I decided to test my ability and see if I any sort of monkey. I decided to customize a Sierra, it is made from deer antler and Solomon Island Blackwood. Mistakes were made, lessons learned for next time.

The only visible metal component is the clip, it is no way perfect but see what you think.

    Cheers
    Darren

Beautiful pen Darren. Seems to me you are a little more than a tad off If any monkey can make works of art then challenge him to show you how it is done. A two lathe competition

I think you better send me that pen to study much closer and while I have it you may take a lump of 4x4 jarrah and whack that wacker across his thick head.
The one reason I currently not a current member of my local club is one person went to a market I sell at just to rubbish me and my workmanship

Watsrag I will never say no to a piece of Jarrah but I wouldn't bruise the timber. It is sad that some people get jollies from just being the way they are. You do great work mate and don't let anyone tell you any different

If you can get one of those "secret top" pen kits from Rheizing in china ,hand him that with no instructions ,and see how he goes tell him these are so simple they don't have instructions hehe. But as you said he has a lot to learn ,I have sold pens at the markets to people who have made pens ,and when I ask they say ,"not as good as yours"
That's a very nice contender you have posted there Darren cheers ~ John

i second the 2 lathe competion
doing a closed end pen should shut him up
or even more fun get him to show you a 20 coat CA finish done to perfection

if you still get called a monkey correct him and tell him that you are actually
a silverback gorilla and that said THE DOMINANT MALE

Hey Darren. Over the years I have been in lots of 'groups', Guilds, & clubs. Invariably there is always one person that annoys and generally craps other members off. They usually don't last too long in the club as they get the 'short shift' from members.
    I never forget anything I remember !!

Some monkeys just sit in the trees, make a lot of noise and drop #### on passers by.

Darren. that pen is quite an acomplishment. It is sure to put him in his place if asked to make one similar, or as equally demanding.
Although I commend you on your efforts there, from what I have seen on this forum over the years, I dont think you need to justify your ability.

Normally things like this doesn't get to me but he really just wanted to niggle away. Maybe like the old saying, man on big lathe has a small mind. I just needed to vent guys. I have the runs on the board and have never boasted of what I can do. One thing that was instilled in me was respect. The regard I hold for the likes of Amos, Sam, Gawdlepus, Dai Sensei, Penpal, Dorno, Parris, Artme, when I reach the levels of quality these guys I will be happy. There are many more I admire. Ticky for someone who till Wednesday had never made a pen and we have him come over to the dark side, huge respect for having a go. It was the lack of respect of a person that has a 4 week turning course as his ability that really ticked me off. thanks for your support.maybe I am just getting old and cranky

    Cheers
    Darren

Thats a beautiful pen you have there.

I'm very new to this game & not really qualified to comment on turning or pens, but I know that bloke your talking about, he turns up everywhere. a different name & a different face, but there he is, just waiting to boost himself up by putting others down.

I used to shoot competitive Clay Target, Simulated Field & Game. He was the bloke that told me that shooting with a shotgun is too easy, as you can't miss. I showed him though, I'm really good at missing.

    Thanks Bdar.

The support & encouragement I have had from the members here has been truly inspiring.

My Instructor, Cyril, is an old farmer who loves his pen making & I think that he sells most of his pens & puts the money into the small community of Mundoora.

It might be a little while before I can do any more, as I have a large project on the go at the moment, 3 pieces of Solid Jarrah furniture, that I have had a little trouble getting finished do to recent events. Friday is my woodworking day as a rule, but I snuck last Wednesday in.

It seems that I may be spending about twice as much as I originally intended on a lathe, so I better get stuck into this furniture to make a bit of the readies.

The time wont be wasted though, as I am learning more about what I need to get started. From my limited experience, it seems a bandsaw is a real asset, but fortunately I have a nice one. I might buy some of the smaller, less expensive tools that I will need, Eg., Chisels, Chuck, Mandrel, etc.

I am looking forward to getting my Lathe though, might get a good deal at the Melbourne WWW show.

Darren dont stoop to his level.

You know your ability and you are proud of what you do.

Wait till he brings peices along for show and tell, then rip him apart , but in a subtle way.

Be critical in your assesment of his peice but offer advice on how it would be better. You get more runs on the board that way, also ask him what he thinks is wrong with it, to see if he is really learning anything.
