    Default Acrylic pens

    YUK

The photos below show why I don't like acrylic pens. Apart from not being natural like timber; sending spikes through the air at high speed when turning them; horrible colours; poisonous; dangerous to make; and stink a lot, they stuff up your tools and make a hell of a mess. A couple of you out there might disagree

put me down for disagreeing. Everything in life has its dangers. Proper attention to safety and it is just as fun. So many more possibilities over boring wood. Less work too.

I only enjoy turning timber pens if I dont have to do a CA finish, that takes any fun out of it for me.

    Sorry Greg,

I enjoy both if each are worked properly and the correct equipment and safety equipment is used there should be no issue. Each have there own hazards if not worked with correctly. I think its more a case of each to their own.
I sell more Acrylic made pens and blanks than I do timber So one gives the customers what they want

    Cheers
    Tony.

Don't know about unnecessary dangers JT. If I needed them, perhaps a walk through the Bronx at midnight? now that would be excitement for the first 30 seconds.

Tony, I was talking to one of the greatest pen makers in the world today and he said, timber is the only way to create a masterpiece and if you want resin, buy a waterman. I found it hard to argue with advice of that quality

good one Brad. The Ubeaut Glo puts a nice shine on them if friction and applied

Yeah, I know there are many other finishes out there, but I do the ones that the customer wants, mostly thats hard and very glossy.

    Greg,

Who was that greatest pen maker in the world ? I do not disagree with your comment, but coming back to your OP working with either material be it acrylic or working with wood both have advantages and disadvantages and both can be yuk horrible and poisonous.
    Cheers

i make what my customers want.... something different to what everyone else in the area is making...

everyone around here makes wood.... basic, straight up, plain wood

i decided a while ago that the only basic wood pens i will make is customer orders... all of my wood pens are now segmented so they stand apart and people can see why they are more expensive

i am selling heaps of my metal pens... because no one else around me is doing them... they stand out... and the bright metal attracts their attention

as to this greatest pen maker i too would love to know who he/she may be... there are alot of people making outstanding pens out there... from wood and man made products

does resin/acrylic make a mess at the work staions.... yes
does wood make a mess at the work stations... yes

    i can't see the difference
