Hey Neal, yes slim lines and stream lines are separate kits with the differences you have mentioned. David aka Timberbits sells Stream line center bands as spare parts. So you can buy a slim line kit as well as a stream line center band and gives you 2 options.

ahh ok a bit more delving and i found a different set of bushings for the streamline, different to the slim. so the slim is a parralel type and the stream is not? (wider in the centre to cater for the larger band?)

so buy a slim kit and big band and streamline bushes( given my mandrel came with i assume slim bushes standard), have a crack at it in streamline format, and if ya mess it up you may recover it to a slim?

    is that the idea?

How i learnt was i got shown on a slim line and then had to work it out for myself basically ive had none bust up or anything but ive only made about 50 pens the only problem ive had is what type of finish to put on i sand to 2500 and then put natural wax and polish on which is refined bees wax and citrus oil. What finish does everyone else use?

Thanks Bdar, i'll be able to finalise my order for dave now knowing better what i need, mate thank you, cheers.

and woodkid, for my acrylics i sand to 800, micromesh wet, then eubeuts EEE. For my wood i sand to 800 apply 10 coats of thin CA, wet micromesh and again finish with EEE. I'm still playing with my processes and very new, but these work for me.

This is how i make all my pens. I turn the bit you hold onto first because if you make a mistake you can make it the straight bit and the other bit the curved bit providing you dont bugger it up

The streamline centre band allows you to have a thicker pen built on a slimline ,no need for bulges that sometimes look a bit out of place ,so you have more meat to play with ,sometimes important with certain materials to help them hold together a bit better you can still have them straight with a gentle slope down to the nib dia, for the last 1'2 " or so , in the end we look for variety and elegance in much of what we do ,the tecniques learned with slims will be good for all other kits we might like to try in the future ,in the end it's what makes us happy with our efforts cheers ~ John

How I apply 20 thin coats of CA as a finish « TimberBits Blog check out the video on that page Woodkid, Dave's vid has been referenced here before and well worth watching his series for tips n tricks here and there, 6 minutes or so on the video, and i guess it takes about that long or a little longer to apply, whitch in the sceme of things isn't too long if you've done the preparation for it, there is a few how to's in text and variations of this finish in the how to section of this forum too. hope that helps. if a picture tells 1000 words this vid series speaks volumes.
