Advice on drill press vice please?
Hi Folks,
I'm going to buy a better drill press than my little rexxon bench one I have now. I'l looking at one of those that is like a full pedestal press, but only about 1.2m high instead of 1,6m, just means I'll need a small stand to mount it on.
So, I can;t decide what pen vise I should get. Can people comment on the one listed and/or which ones you want/have and why?
My choices are
1. CWS pen vice
2. Addictive Pen Vice
3. Standard Ebay 100mm small press vice
4. Ebay mill vice
Thanks. Russell.Pen Affair Craft Supplies - Cheapest Pearl Ex & Pemo Polymer Clay in Australia

Russell,
Have thought about upograding my vice as well, I use the standard Ebay one that you link to, although I think I paid $15 for it at a local shop (Can't think where).
I have a full size pedestal drill press with a rack and pinion height adjustment, couldn't live without it now. The height adjustment is the best feature on it.
Once the table is squared I never have a trouble with drilling blanks, I put two pieces of 2 x 2 in the vise side by side and drill a hole down the join and then the corners of the blanks sit in those grooves and hold everything square.

I use a Cross Vice with a couple of adaptions. Bolts straight onto the Drill Press table with three points and very easy to centre because you have movement both ways. Cost me $65 at Gasweld Tool Centre. Some where in the forums there is a picture of my setup.

I got a mill vice. Thinking forward, it serves MANY other purposes too.

I use one similar to Mr Carroll's offerings (got it from Brett)
I'd like one of the X Y axis jobs but not necessarily for pen blanks - carbatec sell them, link here
I like the one I have because, once setup it hits centre every time without too much fuss
PS you won't know yourself with a decent drill pressregards

Hmmm, here's an interesting one on EBay, supposedly shipping from the USA. Here's a few snippets from the description
MINI VISE – home use
The simple vise which is useful for hobbies.
For fixation of parts such as hobby.
For fixation of the adhesion part.
Caution:
-Please do not use it any place other than the fluent plane top.
-There is clamping power weakly because this product made by plastic.
-This is a thing of facility. The adsorption fixed power and goods of these goods are bound tight, and there is a limit in the power to fix. In binding a thing with especially weight tight and fixing, be careful.
-Please do not use it in addition to the original purpose.
-Please keep it away from children.

Yes the ebay version does seem expensive.
From memory I paid $79.00 from carba-tec.

i got one from brett but it's the older style that he no longer sells. Pretty basic vise but it works well. It's quite similar to the carbatec offering. One bit of advice though. If your drill table is large, consider how you'll mount the vise on it. If it's a quick clamping affair then make sure the clamp has the depth to reach over the table and secure the vise well. I ran into trouble with my drill originally because the table on it is quite big. Solved it with a big clamp otherwise use hold downs built for that purpose.

what i use is the long "Nova" pin jaws , i have a heap of 15mm wide packers ranging from 0.5 , 1 , 2 mm that i pack the out of square blanks to get the hole where i want it
melamine edge strip and thick sheet gal , i have a drill press but prefer to drill blanks on my lathehow come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole

I had thoughts of making my own self centring vise but by the time I got the bits together I could see it was going to be a bit cumbersome.
I have since thought about an xy vise as I would use it for other purposes too.
I also drill using a chuck in the lathe.

My Drill Vice
Modified jaws fitted to the xy axis unit, slack adjusted out of the two racks for accuracy. Shows the jaws holding a blank in the drilling position and a blank in the reaming position, dual purpose.
Regards Peter.

A bit confused Peter. Both pics look the same to me.
Some questions:
How do you adjust the slack out of the racks?
Is that a parabolic fluted drill bit?
