    Default affordable lathe

    Hi,

I'm looking for a nice present for my father.
He is getting on a bit and his eyesight isn't great, but would like to get in to some woodturning. Probably turning out (small) bowls and little trinkets, possibly pens.

Is this $99 lathe a good start, or is it likely to be rubbish?

    thanks guys

Go with the carbatech, it is a Jet in disguise, cast in China and assembled in the same factory in Taiwian.

I've got a carbatec mini as my back up lathe. Love it!

I've also got the GMC equivalent of that Xceed lathe sitting in my garden shed. If you can cover the shipping to your place, it's yours. Probably not worth the shipping cost though...

    Me Too

I have a carbatec Mini Lathe aswell which was my main lathe until recently and it is now a back up lathe but works great and well worth the $269 that they cost. I started on it and have had no problems.

    Cheers Ian

    Reece,

Untube it, fix a roundish 12 inch dia. ply panel to the faceplate, get some sticky backed velcro base (got mine from Thesandpaperman) an 80 grit disc and a 120grit. Fabricate a base / front face ledge, an great as a blank truing up sander or other. Works for me an mines the same design except 25 years older.
