Ahhh, my precioussss... A Pink Ivory pen.
T'other week I took Ruffly up on the kind offer she made us of some hand-crafted pen sleeves in exchange for a pen. They turned up in the mail this morning (Thank you, Wendy! Now to make some pens to go in 'em!) so I thought I'd best pull out my finger and finish my half of the transaction.
The kit is yet another old one that I believe to be discontinued, an RB3 Classic Deluxe, and the timber is some much loved Pink Ivory I had put away for "that special piece."
Finished with CA then EEE, as EEE, Shellawax and oils on the raw timber darken the colour too much, making it more of a red. Pink should stay pink, IMHO, so CA won the day by default. I may not like the stuff, but it definitely has it's place. I EEE'd the CA 'cos I wanted to reduce the plasticky feel; of course this removes the mirror gloss but I think 'tis worth if for the increased tactility. Just my personal opinion, of course. [shrug]

NPGJ Skew nice execution of crafting and choice of timber as well. Pink Ivory can have a nasty habit of going crack in the night. A nice looking kit, there were some good ones around that they stopped making, some of the new ones don't come close I feel. A CA finish as well, for the right reasons. I like it a lot mate.

Hey Bloke, you did damned good. Colour, shaped, kit all matched very well. Go pour yerself a glass of something refreshing. Distilled newt juice might be the go.

very nice! I've never turned pink ivory.. now I'm thinking I should give it a try. that's a sharp looking kit, too. They discontinued it? Anything along those lines that you know of? that nib looks sharp. (sharp as in 'smart' .. good.. er .. .damn these oceans!)

Kit and timber look great together Skew. Is the kit a push on, or screw on lid (I can't see any thread, but may be my eyes). Also, where did you score the pink ivory? I am after some bigger pieces rather than just pen blanks.

Thanks for the kind words people. Every now'n'again a pen goes together so easily it feels like it "just made itself" and this was one of them.
It's a push-on lid. That's my only quibble about this kit, as apart fromn the adapters pressing into the brass tube, all other components are threaded.
The Pink Ivory was a gift from a friend, 'twas a piece about 3"x4"x6"!! Badly split and with significant sapwood & inclusions, but still suitable for a few pens and worth a pretty penny. I believe he sourced it through The Woodsmith, who's just down the road from here, but I'm not sure if there's any large pieces left.
I like friends like that, could do with more.
Yeah, I used CA. It'll take me a while to get over it but I'm sure the nightmares will stop eventually.
That particular kit's discontinued as far as I know. There are similar, cheaper kits around but they lack the small details that make me think "Nice!"
Pink Ivory is a lovely wood to turn, very forgiving and easy on the tools. I'm pretty sure it's not as rare as dealers would like us to think (how else would they justify the ridiculous prices?) but it is a rare wood and not easy to come by.
Like true Ebony & Lignum Vitae, every turner should try it at least once.

Skewy, the nightmares were worth it you did a top job. You should be pleased. Where do you find such a precious wood you are talking about?

Great pen Skew, now we all are wanting a source for Pink Ivory, even if we can only afford one piece each! Amos
