    Default Alternative to CA finish

    Hi All,

Just turned a slim line in PNG Rosewood and finished it with CA. It was first try and I think it turned out pretty well. Problem is I had a really bad reaction with my eyes to the CA. I was wearing full protective everything and I have never felt anything like that before. Feels like its burning my eyes out from the inside out.

To put it simply I need another way of finishing my timber pens. I have been reading heaps of stuff on line, but everyone has different ways of doing it and the majority always use CA. Is there another way?

    My inventory for finishing:
    EEE U-Beaut Wax
    Brasso
    Car Polish - Auto Gleam
    CA thin and medium
    Micro mesh pads
Polishing Rags (Buff rag, Terry Toweling, Paper Towel)

    Cheers
    Shoey

Try a search on here as there is various different finishes that have been discussed on here several times before. Poly dipping is one and some have had good success with that however it comes down to the amount of time and effort you need to put in to achieve the desired finish. CA is good long lasting quick and when done right looks awesome.
You are not alone with your reaction to the CA many others have reactions too. try looking at dust extraction to exhaust any CA fumes that may help also.

    Cheers
    Tony.

    Cheers Tony,

I have an old Vaccume cleaner I can turn into a dust extraction unit.
I will try it out and see how I go.

Hi Shoey. The most important thing is ventilation. Open up all doors & windows and put a fan on to blow out the fumes.
    I never forget anything I remember !!

    Hi Shoey
You can always use what is generally called the WOP finish which means wipe on poly and it is a product that you can buy at many places including bunnings and other places. It is call minwax wipe on polyuathane and is usually put on with a brush.
The downfall to this is that once painted on it must be given time to fully dry before the next coat can go on and the more coats the better. Durring summer its fine but can be a problem in the colder months. There are tutorial in here somewhere just look up WOP finish.

Hi Shoey, I mounted a LARGE fan onto the wall, just to the left of the lathe, so that when CAing, I have it running, doesn't do much for the hairdo, but it helps. Still wear the safety gear though as an added precaution.
I also use EEE and a Beall Buffing System. Put on a coat of sanding sealer, and when dry lightly sand, EEE it polishing as best as possible, then using the 3 wheels to polish to a nice finish.
    Regards

Maybe you are using too much CA or have the lathe up too fast when applying it? you should turn down the lathe after sanding and before applying CA, and then only use 5 drops per pass on the entire slim line. As others said, have a small pedestal fan blowing away from the lathe.
