Amboyna burl - resawing headache
Hey folks,
I bought a lump of Amboyna burl and am trying to resaw it into pen blanks. Man, either my bandsaw blade is blunt, or this stuff is hard!! The block is about 80cm square, and my poor old bandsaw was only cutting it at about 1/3mm per second, and I'm having to force it through to get it cutting at all! I should probably be using a wider tooth blade as well, but I wanted as clean a cut as possible, as I only just have enough space to cut it 4 x 4 and still have around 19mm sqaure blanks, which is my target size. Sure was a bit of smoke coming off, but the wood hsn't been burnt.
Also, is this stuff hazardous. It's got a very pungent odour while sawing - still sticking to me now I've finished, and as the topic says, I literally have a headache, although that could be from not having had breakfast yet either.
At least I got the wide cut done, so not it's not so thick. Hopefully I'll have 16 nice blanks when I'm done

This might be way off base, but have you checked the rake on your blade?
I was having trouble recently on my band saw with a new blade, and it turned out that
one of the idlers was mis-positioned and it took the rake off of one side of the blade.
Didn't cut worth a damn after that.. even though the teeth were still sharp
ps.. I love the smell of amboyna. That means it couldn't be good for me.
Or it means some politician will outlaw it..

Russell
I feel that my happy experience with a real lot of Golden Amboyna burl that arrive around 11/2 inches square was the most delightful timber and light in weight I have ever cut in burl timber, it is stable however this timber was a couple of years dry.
I cut it into four easy breezy, now the red Amboyna and the New Ginea Rosewood may be different. On a pen swap on this site previously with Timberbits he made my pen from New Guinea Rosewood maybe he can add to my experience. The Golden is more rare and mine came from Vanuatu.
I you go to my post on the 30th May last year you will get an idea of how much the two pics over lap but thats a lot of pure burled timer.
Referring to others over the years they all enjoy the smell of the timber and unless your timber received a dose of something in shipment no one to date has registered anything but praise for the smell or fumes. All timber may create an alergy suggest masks such as Bunning sell with the little valve in front apart from the elastic mark on the face do a cheap damn good job.
Take care Peter.

Hmm, maybe it was whatever was burning that was creating my odour, or I just have a different sense of smell to others. Might try swapping to a different blade before I continue on. This is only a relatively new blade though. Another $20 down the drain?

Can't help much on this one Russell, but I vaguely remember a lot of bandsaw info in the main forum, might pay to do a search, My little "bottom end " baby bandsaw burns everything it touches hehe, about 8 mths now on the one 1/4 blade ,it only cuts blanks to length though ,so not that overworked cheers John

Now I'm not trying to be a smart-a** but is the blade twisted
ie I got one last year, put it on and noticed the teeth were pointing up. easy to rectify but might not be as noticeable on a finer blade, dunnoregards

me too when I unfolded a blade last time it turned inside out and the teath now run up hill. I was sure i check it when fitting and tried to cut unfortunately nothing but smoke... stopped the machine and sure enough the teath are all pointing up hill, very common and easy to do removed the blade and with a quick twist it was right side out and cutting as good as new

Anything's possible. I didn't get to check, although I am usually careful when I put the blades on to have them the right way.
I ended up with 4 blanks sawn, witha lot of pushing. As the wood got thinner, cutting got a lot easier, naturally, but still a shove. It has ended up with a fairly nice surface from the cut though
I'll post pics of the cutup pieces whenh I'm home again.

Alrighty well,
Here's half my block cut up - 8 blanks. thought it might have been a problem keeping them to the right size, but it's all gone well, despite the tough cutting.
