    Question assembling pen kits.

To all, I am new to wood turning(18 months or so) and have taken on making a wood turned pen. Sounds simple but i am stumped. I have the pen kit and have turned down the wood with the sleeves inside. The part I am having trouble with is the assembling process. The componants seem to be too tight to go together and i don't want to force them. Is there something i am missing?

Any advice would be muchly appreciated.

There's a pen turner sub-forum here Mat; might be worth a scan of the posts.

Yes, the fit is meant to be tight. With care it can be done in a vise with wood jaws or in the lathe itself. Just be sure to keep it all square and lined up.

    Welcome to the forum.
    Cheers, Ern

What style of kit are you using?... maybe a photo of the blanks & components will help us identify it if you don't know what the style is.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

The name of the type of pen you are using will make it easier for those to offer an opinion.

    Default assembling pen kit

The pen kit is labled 7mm European pen kit.
Thank you all for your input, I have now finished assembling my first successful working pen.(Two casualties getting there). I have made 2 wood jig plates to fit my vice and with a little care it seems to work.
    Thanks heaps.
Any more advise would be appreciated.

    Regards Mat.

    Hey Mat,

What Rum Pig said, we need pics of your work and your mistakes.

If the fit seems to be too tight a tad of grease smeared on the end of the part helps. Make sure after you have glued the tube into the blank to run a pen mill down the tube to clean out any surplus glue that may have gotten into the tube when gluing it in place. Any glue inside the tube will make it difficult to fit the components into the tubes.
If you don't have a pen mill, you can use a drill bit or a piece of sand paper rolled round to fit inside the tube to get rid of the glue.
    Reality is no background music.
    Cheers John

This is mainly to justify our own uselessness and to have a laugh at someone else rather than being laughed at our selves.

    Just joking!
