Assembling Slimline PENCIL
I have run into a problem assembling a slimline pencil. I have attached an instruction diagram I got off the internet.
The problem is that when I pressed the Sleeve into the front tube I could not get the pencil mechanism through far enough to screw it onto the tip. The only thing I could think of was that the sleeve should not be fully pressed against the tube. In this case it cracked the timber also so it is a matter of starting all over.
I also found that my latest kits of slimline pencils are a bit hit and miss with parts missing and duplicate parts in other kits.
Has anyone else experience these problems and how did you overcome them?

Hi Greg. I had the same problem with the first couple I did. I bought 10 of them, but only ever did 2, as they aren't much chop. The lead is sooooooo thin, that it breaks into about 50 bits before you get it in the pencil. It was a while ago now, and I can't recall how I fixed your problem. Bloody old age
I never forget anything I remember !!

This maybe a silly question but are the sleeve lengths and diameters the same each side of its stop band? might be that they're not and it pressed in backwards? not seeing the actual part myself i can only guess, might be worth a measure up with the calipers mate.

The photo of is in in the attachment Neal. One end of the sleeve is narrower than the other and can only fit one way. Its a nuisance as I am doing one for a guy who wants a pen and pencil set. I might get onto David about it.

If its possible then which way should it go in?
This will be the last one I do, they are not worth the effort.

I can't find one to check (I stopped making these yrs ago ) can the nib section be pressed in the wrong way round ,have a look at it and see if the pencil section will go in from the front , from memory you put the pencil in from the clip end and it goes down and sits on a shoulder on the nib adapter ,enough of the thread then sticks through to allow the nib to screw on and retain the pencil in the body section .And these things need to treated with kid gloves , I am sure all the leads were broken in multiple bits before they got to me , .07mm leads are a bit better but not much hehe, cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

You are right John in describing the assembly. The problem is I can't get enough of the thread of the pencil mechanism to let it screw onto the tip. I think the sleeve is the problem. They really are a substandard kit and one I won't be buying again. One kit didn't have a thread on the tip and another kit had two bands but no sleeve.

If you look at the sleeve, the outside ledge/band will be for where the press in stops it from going further into the tube, and if i'm guessing right there will be an internal ledge/protrusion to stop the infill falling out and what thread is allowed to protrude. use your verniers like a depth guage and see if its different internally. i could be very wrong though.
And yeap i'd seen the assembly diagram but as we know they can be oversimplified sometimes, even misleading, i meant a snapshot of the offender itself. If its not a rush job i'd be happy to look it over in an effort to help, outside work hours if thats any help to you. Bring it over for a cuppa .
Neal.

I made a few and had no troubles. Doesn't help with what you've done though.
