    Default Australian Ebony Sedona

Heres another one I got to finish off today while I gave myself a bit of shedtime.

I started this a few months ago, I ended up tossing the barrels aside in disgust, because I had so much trouble with the CA finish on this timber.
I rumaged through the shavings on the bench and found them, so I could give them another whirl.

Had a little bit more luck with it today. Though I am still not entirely happy with the result.

I had planned to put it on a trivalent chrome Baron, but it just didnt look right, so the chrome Sedona was the next choise.

It proved to be a bit hard to photograph, I should have cleaned it a bit better, every smudgy fingerprint and speck of dust shows up on the black

Ironwood what a great piece of Australian Ebony. Not to many people I talk timber with realise that we do have Ebony here in Australia. I am glad you found the barrels in your shavings and gave it another crack. Good choice in the kit, it compliments the timber well and your finish looks great.

    Cheers
    Darren

Thanks Darren, its certainly an unusual timber, I have enough for 3 or 4 more pens if I can work around the cracks.

Would the cracks be noticable if you used a black dye mixed in epoxy at all?

Lovely fit, photo's look very nice and crisp (i wish i could get this sorta quality outa my iphone). I certainly didn't know we had aust ebony. Is / was it inherantly crack prone as a timber or was it another issue?

There were a couple of small ones in this blank, I filled them with some of the crumbled black swarf that I collected when I drilled the holes for the tubes, I used CA to bond it together, its almost undetectable against the black timber.

Neal, cracks are the nature of the beast with this timber, I have been told.

The bits I have were coated heavily with wax when it was first cut, and it still cracked quite badly as it dried.

I dont think its a true Ebony, I think it might have been called Ebony because of the black bits that seem to be random through the timber.

I will post the proper name tomorrow when I find what it is.

Edit; after checking up, this is a true Ebony - Diospyros Humilus.

You are right John, we are our own harshest critic.

I know I could show 100 non-penturners that pen, and not one of them would notice the tiny flaws that annoy me if I look too closely.
I'm sure we are all guilty of it.

hahahah, guilty as charged your honour!!...i've only done 4 or 5 now, my first was a fail i know a blind man could feel, and the sighted could cringe at. The rest have their own little things i know and think about. I think though i've been overly self critical long before i began pens.

I did some checking up on this timber, I was wrong, it apparently is a true Ebony.

    Diospyros Humilis

A google search bought up quite a few pages, not a lot of help from most of them.

Ttit's website has the most helpful info that I found Australian Ebony

It gets a mention in here too
