Banksia Sierra
Hi All.
Whilst on a family holiday the kids came rushing over during a walk to show me some pods they had found. Lucky me they were Banksia pods! I had seen the wonderful pens others had made from these pods on this website so was keen to attempt my own.
Having spent an afternoon going over threads about these pods and what to do I set to it. I turned it down and filled the holes with coffee grinds and gold glitter (to try and get some sparkle) before applying glue. This took quite some time to get right and unfortunately i think one hole has a see through bit (though the tube shines). Then I applied eight coats of CA, wet sanded and polished. I fit it to a black and gold sierra kit.
I love the colour this wood gives of and had great fun doing it. Now i need to attack a few more pods the kids have hidden somewhere. I may try some different colours next time. Any hints on how to improve my hole filling greatfully welcome!

Nice looking pen
Easiest way to fill the holes is casting the banksia vertically, but filling one by one as you have done still works, it's how I did it for ages. I hope you also soaked the actual banksia with thin CA, they love to move and the filled holes can pop from the movement unless they are held in well.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Holly cow, how cool is that pen ! . Now, ... bloody Banksia pods, along with Black coral, deer antler, Croc jaws, and Acacia tree timber are on my search list.

Lovely pens. I have made a few using our local B costata, they have been slims and to date I have left the small holes as is to show the brass tube, which is not intrusive. I'l try and post some pics tomorrow.
