Beginners Bungles
This Imperial Lotus was about 8 or so years ago, the blank is M3 Classic Mokume Gane from MetallicBlanks.com in the States.
The cost to buy a new blank--yes the blank only--- is around $60 Aust plus postage from USA around $20, = $80
I was a beginner and really loved the blank, originally the pen was in good condition, until someone dropped it at a market!!! lesson learned, M3 metallic blanks do not like being dropped.!
After all these years finally decided to try a repair, the damage to the Cap is more than the photo actually shows, there are fine fractures every where.
While dismantling the cap the former came away from the blank easily, inspection of the former shows that even though I had sanded the brass tube, either wrong glue or not enough or both is evident; I needed to use epoxy and coat both sides, the inside of the blank and the brass tube; 95 percent of blowouts are due to incorrect gluing, (generalization).
I inspected the main pen blank and it also had fine fractures.
Both blanks were redone, especially the cap, with the cap I filled the crack with silver paint to match the silver pattern, black looked ugly.
Then many coats of CA, and then smooth and finish and reassembled, the clip is postioned to cover most of the crack and hopefully the way it is finished it looks like part of the design, intentionally marked by the creator to create a once off pen!!!
Peruse the pictures, had it been a cheaper blank I would have turfed the blank and started again. Amos

As usual, an excellent job. No one will even know if you don't point it out.

Bruce, just checked out TimberBits, and the largest size they have is 3/4" x 3", that is $30 and I would need 2 of them, Also I am a bit wary with the larger kits I would prefer a slightly larger blank, 7/8" would be better. So the cost is still quite high, no reflection on TimberBits, M3 is expensive and that is the way it is!! Amos

I guess this is aimed towards beginners and worth remembering for the more experience as well. Personally I have had heaps of stuff ups when I started out, blow out, piece flying off the lathe, miss alignment when pressing together and the list goes on. One observation that I have in regards to the stuff ups is that the more you repair the easier they become. As pens are made up from component parts it just a matter of resolving the issue with the part and moving to the next step.

Great save Amos.
Yes we all make silly mistakes or even down the track rushing to get the job done.
Carelessness by those handling items for sale stand by me and many stores "You damage or break it you bought it" no warranty !!!
Me with my hands realise how easy it is to drop or even knock things the wrong way in my own place.
