    Default Three Biblical Timbers

A Christmas order I delivered this afternoon.

Bethlehem Olive wood, Bethlehem Carob wood and Shittim wood grace these 'Fisher of Men' pen kits and all have 10 coats of Med CA except for one.

Of all these the Shittim pen blank has the best chatoyance and I tried to capture it.

An interesting thing happened with the first BOW pen on the left. It would not take a finish on the end by the nib and acted like it was oily. This one also was the first spalted BOW I've ever ran across and I had to take care of that as I turned with the super-thin CA.

I ended up doing one of my Iso bathes I normally due for cocobolo and then using some super-thin CA and flooded the area and made a slurry paste and worked it into the wood.

I then did two coats of super-thin CA and then two coats of Thick CA and polished the blank with Plastx and a final coat of Kiwi Natural Shoe Polish.

You've done a good job on them Rhos. They look like a Sierra kit but I noted the fish symbol on the pen. Very nice indeed and beautifully finished.

I agree the Shittim looks like a nice timber. Did you have more blanks? Is there a lot of colour variance between them?

Yes the BOW is (olive) oily. I normally wipe down with acetone once it's sanded, before putting the finish on. I forgot on one pen, which I did with Shellawax, and it ended up a very Matt finish which I couldn't get to shine up.

I have a couple more blanks and there isn't any color variation in these. These came from a house that was being remodeled and the flooring in the house was this Shittim wood. So all pieces are 3/4" thick.

Excellent work and great combination of blanks and kit.
