different blank
while shifting stuff to make my new pen making area i rediscovered my old rod wrap lathe and in a blinding flash of stupidity an idea hit me , cleaned up the old lathe and did a couple of blanks rod wrap style , just did a simple wrap and found out i am a long way out of practice been quite a few years .
this is some pretty rough wrapping definatley not up to my custom rod stanards but if it works out ok and with some practice i may be able to turn out some niffty blanks .
did these prototypes on sierra blanks .
i am off to drown them in resin right now i am expecting to have problems with bubbles from the cotton.
oh yeah and if this works i still have the odd roll of cotton left over from when i stopped rod building enough to do a few blanks me thinks.

Boy that photo could not come at a better time. I have been looking for some satin cloth sleeving to try on some pens and have been having no luck. It might just be possible to spin my own. Thanks for showing and can't wait to see the pen.

yeah its in the picture above its called a rod lathe , other than that you could adapt some thing maybe a cheap rotisserie motor or sewing machine motor .by the way its not quite as easy as just wrapping thread around a tube ,
oh yeah and its nothing to do with fly tying they are done by hand in a tiny little vice or chuck mounted in a vice

the idea seems to work but the prototype is a bit rough , just need to sharpen up my rod wrapping skills and it has potential for some interesting pens .

i actually was not going to worry about even turning this one because i did'nt think it would be any good ,
but out of boredom this arvo i decided to shove it in the lathe and spin it and to my supprise it came out i think better than the first one .
we have no sun here at the moment for photos but you get the idea , still pretty bad thread work but hey im out of practice .
