Playing is learning hehe, looks like a lot will be lost when finished to size ? maybe thinner strips would contrast better , but from someone who has never done a lamination I am probably the last one to comment on this sort of thing cheers ~ John

Good start to a new learning curve, yes some alulminium and yes maybe thinner segments but at least you are on the way to what I am sure will be some great looking blanks. Keep up the good work.

Its definetely got potential. A bit of playing around to get the right balance and contrast will pay off.

Not sure if the offset on the cross was intentional or not, but if you want the crosses to line up, you need to take out exactly the same thickness as the insert you are putting back in.

I also agree with John on all aspects including the never done this sort of pen at all but chaffing at the bit to have a go when i get the guts it would be great to see the pics with a bit more light? anyway well done and keep them comming.

yes it was meant to be offset, wanted to see what a much larger inset piece would do, i like what it did so now to work out the optimal size

i think maybe the smaller light section will mostly disappear, let us know

the biggest problem i have had with alloy is - i am allergic to anything epoxy - which means the glue is out, i have been using gorilla glue, i think its a polyurethane, but it doesn't like heat too much, but i will try the alloy again with it and drill in very small amounts allowing everything to cool down before going further

G'day MIK, That is exactly what I like about this stuff. Trying to achieve what you conceive, it's great fun and sometimes frustrating and sometimes the light globe above your head goes flash and it all comes together, bloody eureka. Other times it all turns to scrap and that's ok too. That looks pretty good mate and refining it will produce that pen that you can see in your head already.

Mik kindly sent me this blank to play with as he knows I have yet to produce this type of blank, also it was a bit longer than standard so needed a longer kit to fit it without losing any detail, I found a knight kit was almost perfect, so did this one this morning , thanks Mik came out pretty good ,inspite of my photography , cheers ~ John

Mate you did the work I just turned it into a finished product hehe, as it was already round it was a snap to drill in my small metal lathe ,although done very carefully as not sure how good gorilla glue would hold under drilling , I actually thought the red was Jarrah ,and maybe a bit of maple or tassie oak , all come up good though and just a thin layer of CA and a few medium layers, I had to try and avoid too much hand work as I had a small accident when off gathering wood with Neil (dai-sensei ) through the week , I might get the others done tomorrow with luck ! cheers ~ John

not sure on the light colored wood, found it on the shed floor

the other is red gum from a stump i gathered when they removed the floor in a shop, i believe the floor had been there for around the 100 year mark, you could say its seen a bit of foot traffic

i haven't had a problem drilling wood glued to wood with the gorilla glue, just the alloy, might get a chance to have a play next weekend, this weekend has been taken up with State Archery Champs.
