What Books should a beginner buy?
Hi All,
I have been checking threads for a while now and need some advice.
I am interested in Pen Turning, I am booked into an introduction to turning course at Trend Timbers next month but was wanting to do a bit of 'pre reading' around turning, and pen making in particular.
Are there any books that you would recommend should be read first up? I will try my local library but would like to have a few titles to look for.
Thanks
Brendan

Join a woodworking group somewhere near where you live they all have libraries, save you a lot of money and they all have an interest in helping newbees. They also mostly have forms of instruction and indeed it is by far the best way to travel as you can assess different equipment while you make decisions on what you really like to make now and later, perhaps there are members of the forum in your location who are prepared to help.
If you are able to travel to Canberra to the Working With Wood Show in September first week send me a pm and we can meet up at the show, the ACT Woodcraft Guild I belong to will be doing demos etc and I will be there for the three days.
Have fun Peter

Or have a look at this guy's site. He has a full tutorial on pen turning for beginners. You can also buy DVD's from him relating to various aspects of woodturning.

This material was invaluable in me getting in to pen turning.

www.pennstateind.com will send you a free DVD on Pen turning. It is actually a good DVD in the basics of pen turning. Good books to try are
Unique and Unusual Pens by Dick Sing; The Pen Turner's Workbook by Barry Gross as well as the already mentioned by by Russ and Kip

Go to 'youtube' & search 'pen turning'. Some good videos there.
