Default Just bought my first lathe

Hi Everbody, I have just bought my first lathe a Vicmarc VL175 20 year old going well. I have aquired a few parts with the lathe one being a pen mandrel and I am tring to work out what size the mandrel will be or are they all the same size. The mandrel has 3 brass bushes and a steel boss, which I presume is tension by winding the tailstock into the internal counter sink holding the pen on the mandrel am I correct. The dia of the mandrel is 6.28 mm and the bushes are about 8.50 mm. Does this make it a 7mm mandrel ???? I have been reading like mad and am about to start destroying timber at any moment.

    Cheers Jerry

    Jerryj,

You have a standard mandrel which will take all the bushes for different pens. The bushes you have appear to be for pens with 7mm tubes. A search of Pen types will show which pens use 7mm tubes.

7mm is the Outside Diameter of the tube.

That mandrel will do for all your pens, you need to buy different bushes and drills for respective pens.

All bushes have a 6.28mm internal diameter to fit on that mandrel. The mandrel should have a No 2 Morse taper which should fit into your VL175

    Thumbs up

The mandrel shaft nedds to be checked for straightness

When you start making pens be sure not to push the tailstock centre into the shaft end too hard or the mandrel will flex and you will get out of round pens.

Thanks for the replies Skot & Artme. Just as I hoped now I will order a few slimline pens and have a try.

    Cheers Jerry
