BOW Elegant Beauty
Hi,
I finally had a crack at turning some of the BOW in the recent group buy. I really enjoyed working with this timber. It just came off the chisel beautifully, sanded well and even took a finish well - I wasn't sure that shellawax glow would work well on such an oily timber, but to me it looks fine. I guess time will tell.
I really don't think the timber matches the chrome/satin chrome kit as well. I only had that or Black Ti kits, so it was a bit of bad luck I may buy a gold coloured kit and swap the blank over.
As I had half a blank left over I decided to do a letter opener which was gold to see how it went. Much better match. It was the first time I'd used this letter opener kit (the one where the tang goes right through the handle). My previous kits (from Carbatec, I think) didn't have this feature and are much poorer quality for it.
Comments appreciated as always...
(oh, and ahem, please excuse the finger prints all over the EB... it was the only photo that had them, but it was the best for showing off the timber )
Cheers,

That is one very nice blank
I agree with the proposed kit change, good idea
But I can't see much shine on the timber, maybe just the lighting!
Like the letter openerregards

Dave the Black Ti Elegant Beauty does compliment the timber nicely. A very good transition from the barrel to the hardware. Keep us posted how the finish holds up with use. That is the beautiful thing about Sierras and Elegant Beauties, there is alway a piece for another Sierra, EB or letter opener. Two fine pieces you have crafted.

Nice pen and letter opener
I'm not a big fan this style of letter opener as they seem to small in the hand. But they are a quality made kit and mos people do like them.Cheers Rum Pig

You're quite right about that one... I like making sierras but I'm not a huge fan of the ones with black enamel - they look too 'plastic' for my tastes. Thought I'd give the EB a try and I must say I do like the kits. They're nice an easy to dissasemble too I normally prefer the black/chrome colours, but in this case I think I'll order a gold ti one for comparisson...

You're right - there isn't a hige amount of shine, more of a soft glow (which is a look I like), but the lighting in the photo was pretty ordinary. What's the point of shelling out thousands for a DLSR, nice lense, etc if you rush your shots and don't bother using a tripod!
I did the finish on a very cold (for sydney, anyway!) and wet day, so this might have affected it a bit. If I change the kit, I might remount the blank and polish it up again...

Thanks!
I tend to agree about the letter openers - there are nicer ones out there. The problem I have with them is that they're good to give as a set with a pen and most of the nicer letter openers are much longer than the pen, which is nice to use but they don't fit in the box! I also like them 'cos they use up little bits of timber!
