Yep, took one to Sydney some months ago and had no problem whatsoever flying with Virgin. I carried it normally in my top pocket of my shirt and placed it in the tray with my other stuff before entering the departure area of the terminal and wasn't even questioned about the pen. The pen I took was made up of 2 X .308 shells.
You shouldn't have any problems. Even if someone is concerned at first glance, you can take the pen apart to reveal the workings of the pen and anyone can see there is nothing sinister about it. Well, hopefully they can't. Good luck.

Knowing how poorly (American) TSA employees are trained and how unrealistic they are in decision making, I wouldn't try to take a bullet pen on an airplane. No amount of explanation will change the mind of an agent who thinks, or just says, you are a terrorist. Sad loss of freedoms but not worth the hassle to test it.

    Hey LRP,

One of my clients had his bullet pen confiscated at Kalgoolie last month, He has taken it to Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, then some snot at Kalgoolie must have liked the look of it because it was taken, and the explanation was that 'it could blow up in the Plane', wouldn't it have blown up when the guts were soldered in

I would not dare to take a bullet pen on a plane I have had security question me about a fountain pen let alone a bullet pen
But I think I attract security when you get checked for explosives wearing a singlet, football shorts (no pockets) and a pair of thongs it does not leave many places to hide a bomb and for some reason they check me every time without fail

After reading some of the other posts above, it might be an idea to declare the pen to the airline people up front and see what they have to say about it. As i said, I had not problems but in the event of not allowing you to carry it on the plane, the airline will hold it for you until you return and then you can reclaim it. I did this some years ago flying between Brisbane to Sydney and I had a tiny novelty adjustable spanner on my keyring and I was told I could not take it on the aircraft. Guess they were afraid I would take the airplane to pieces in mid flight. Anyway I left it at the airport and retrieved it when I got back to Brisbane a week later.. The funny thing was, my flight from Brisbane was the return part of my trip and I had already brought the spanner up with the same airline the day before and had no problems.

It is not the carrier it is the airport security that stop me. It is funny I can take a gun on a plane but they question my fountain pen Obviously one is in the luggage compartment and one on board.

Personally I would pack it rather than take as carry on. I took one to Singapore. Pulled it apart as much as I could then placed it in a clear zip lock bag and put a note in the bag saying it was a pen. Didn't have any issues with that one

    Thanks everyone
As we are doing the carryon thing I don't think I'll test them
