Bunch-o-Sierra Trivalents
Chance of rain....means I can't run electricity out to the shed and cut blanks, and it's like someone doesn't understand 'global warming' here....it's like cold outside and there is actually snow/sleet in the northwest corner of Arkansas!!!
So, here is what I accomplished this morning.
A Sierra Chrome Trivalent wearing a piece of Crosscut White Oak
HDR close-up:
Finish is sanding with 400grit and then Shellawax EEE, and finally some good ole wax!
A Sierra Chrome Trivalent wearing a piece of Sanguine & Latte blank
Finish is wet sanding through the first four pretty colored pads, and then PlastixPolish....blanks was reverse painted black!
A Sierra two-tone Gold-n-Chrome Trivalent wearing a Halloween blank
Finish is wet sanding through the first four pretty colored pads, and then PlastixPolish....blanks was reverse painted black!
A Sierra two-tone Gold-n-Chrome Trivalent wearing a Twilight Glitter blank
Finish is wet sanding through the first four pretty colored pads, and then PlastixPolish....blanks was reverse painted black!
Had some fun, made some 'stock' for the pen case....gotta go make some coffee. Thanks for looking, and as always....comments/critique is most welcome!!!

Thanks all....
The White Oak sure had some moments while turning... First, I noticed that using the HSS gouge wasn't doing it, so I adjust the toolrest and had at it with the carbide tool. Went must easier, but I did have to stopp about .015" over sized and sand to finally. Was getting some kind of wierd rippling on the surface of the wood!
And it seems that no matter how hard you clean, wipe and whatnot....the blanks not so little 'pores' always have something in them(as can bee seen in the close-up shot). Even using the air set 100PSI wasn't able to get it prefectly cleaned.
Got some milling to do today, rain chances are almost gone, but it sure is cool outside. Thinking Wild Black Cherry super crotched chunk and maybe some smaller logs on the trailer? Got to make a bunch of 1x4xwhatever length for a friend.....although he might not get the super crotched chunks

Beautiful pens Scott. Great work as usual. As a matter of interest why can't you get power to your shed if it is raining?

Ok dumb ass question? Reverse painting the blank? I assume this means painting the inside of the blank before gluing in the tube?
Cheers

Guess I should have been a little more 'explanatory' on this...
By reverse painting the inside of the blank and the tube black, it keeps the really tiny spots near the two end from becoming 'brassy' looking due to the translucence of the material. Different colors of paint during the reverse painting will give different 'see-through', black makes them darker, and white 'washes it out'....and most of the time silver/gray painting is just weird!
Thanks for looking everyone, been making a LOT of these ~ the price can't be beat(timberbits.com) and the customers love them!
