    Default Burl Makeover

What a difference a makeover makes!

I had a go at disassembling and redoing the pen I said I wasn't happy with in this thread https://www.woodworkforums.com/f69/idea-80450. The finish was a WOP finish, but I think I had let it get too old, as it ended up being soft, full of marks and just dull - not satin, not matt, just dull for no apparent reason. Plus I had some gaps fitting to the centre band.

Well, after almost destroying the twist mechanism trying to get it apart, and chipping the end of the wood, I finally managed to get it out in one piece (destroying a spare brass tube in the process). I completely turned off the old finish, reshaped the pen, filled the chip, redid the finish with my first attempt at a CA finish (took 3 goes to get it right) and below is the final result.

The before picture is on the left, the after picture is on the right. I'm very happy with the end result - gaps are gone, line is cleaner, finish is much better, although not quite as glossy as I thought a CA finish was supposed to be, but then I'm not into untraglossy so much, so am happy with how it turned out.

What do you think, definitely an improvement?

Big improvement ! like chalk and cheese, I guess this is one example of leaving a bit of shape, room to move down a bit if needed and of course its all part of the learning curve, wait till you get some glow to use as a finish ,on some woods you can get a mirror shine others will shine ok but not as much, I am still happy with the glow finish I get on all the pens I do in wood. Personally I think burls are a bit wasted on slimlines in general as they are much harder to work down to such thin layers as a slimline , and I hate the waste

Unfortunately no, it's not a real diamond My son's, who's into all thing "gem-like".

I forgot to mention, this exercise also introduced me to making my own spacers/bushings, with some cutting board offcuts. I turned 3 of them just smaller than a Slimline bushing, so I'd have less concern about the CA gluing the bushes on. They still got stuck occasionally (I checked them every few coats) but a quick twist and they were free again. The only thing I had an issue with was CA build up on the blank at the bushing/wood interface. I learned a lot of things with this pen, and any time you learn something new is a good result.

    Thanks for the comments.
