Burl Tas Myrtle JR Gent and Letter Opener
Made another box set out of burl myrtle.
sanded to 400, CA finish, sanded finish to 2000, Brasso then auto polish and wax.
4 thick layers of CA which produced 0.6mm thickness of CA. I experimented with the miter-fix CA that comes with the accelerator, and turned the lathe speed down to about 500 rpm. Miter-fix seems to be a pretty good alternative to thin CA.
Was really happy with the result.
Suggestions or comments welcome.

Lovely set of gear that! glad I only do pens, that keeps me poor enough without using burls to make boxes

Like it, indeed love that Burl and your sympathetic treatment of it.
With another two Peters I spent a day cutting and reclaiming from a copse in Northern Tasmania with your supplier two or probably nearer four years ago.
Myrtle is distinctive and mysterious with its pinkish tinge and fiery burl structure, well seen and real fillets across the corners makes that box unique to you for pens.
Lid treatment is so accessable and easy to use, the lid can hold down your papers while you open letters and write to people.
Thank you for showing us the way both with your humility and quality of material and finish.
Best regards to you and yours. Peter

In the middle of making another burl box, which has much greater burl bits on the lid.
Will post when finished.
Peter, you should take another trip down there. I know I am planning to. Waiting for more cash in the pocket and space in the shed before I go because I know I will be coming back with lots of timber.
Unfortunately I have to pay for my timber, unlike you will all your surprise trailer full of firewood.

That's fantastic mate. Beautiful colours and the two articles compliment each other well. My box making skills, frankly, suck, but then I've never really practiced either.
Can I make one comment though? The middle picture, which shows them in the box, kinda looks a little lopsided. Any way you can get them more centred? I think the presentation would be a little better if you could.

Your right. The pen and letter opener can slide up and down.
I should of centered them both before taking the photo.
Thanks for the suggestion. Will do that next time.

Sorry
haven't commented on this before - probably because I'm jealous
No really, excellent job - absolutely stunning box and pens, worth a minty (sorry a typo, should have been mint)

That's really fancy stuff, David. Very nicely done and an excellent choice of materials. You inspire me.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
