    Default Burls and Beans

Been playing with some Carbera kits. I really like these pens, they show off the blanks well, are simple to assemble, and fit together better than the Sierras (IMO). Kits are from Berea (via Ernie at Bear Tooth)

Michigan Black Cherry Burl with bright copper Carbera and Mylands 3-step finish:

Ultramarine Blue Dyed Box Elder Burl with chrome Carbera and CA/BLO finish:

My wife is the manager of a Starbucks satellite, so I wanted to make something unique for her. Every one is casting grape nuts, shredded wheat, corn cobs, rice, THEIR PARENTS ASHES (gah!), so I figured I'd be able to pull off some coffee beans. Turned out even better than I'd hoped!

Coffee Beans cast in pearlized resin with shredded gold leaf, polished to MM 12000, plastic polish and micro wax. Kit is a satin copper Carbera. :

Well done Karl. I especially like the coffee bean idea, I love new ideas for me to try.

There are a few kits around like your Carbera, I know them as Polaris kits. They are easy kits and show off the pens well, but I have trouble selling them. I find them too small in the hand for males, and too bulky & heavy for the girls. My mum uses one though, made out of cedar to keep the weight down. She finds the length and dia perfect for her hand.

Carberas are made by Berea. I'm not sure what sort of distributors you have down there, but I get mine from Ernie at Bear Tooth Woods. www.beartoothwoods.com

Froggie has them. Carroll's also have them John, known as Polaris kits. I noticed GPW also had some in his store, called something else, but they are not on his web site yet.

Actually, the Polaris kit is a bit different. The Polaris is from the PSI camp, whereas the Carbera is from Berea.

Karl that Cherry Burl is magnificent and the coffee bean pen that has got to be a goer for you. You will have to put some into boutique coffee shops as another outlet for you. Top work mate for casting but also for going out on that limb and going for it.
    Good on you mate.

Damn you and your beans to hell!

I've spent ages sucking all the chocolate off my coffee beans and resisting the urge to chew... don't know how much longer I can resist...

lol - I'll let you in on my secret. Fill up the pockets on your pants with chocolate beans and then just run them through the dryer. Saves on jaw muscles!
