bushes stick to the mandrel
Hi All
I have a problem with the bushes getting stuck on the mandrill and I can't seem to get them off now!
Do you use a some sort of lube when turning so they don't dry out?
And another thing is that my mandrill shaft is getting indentations from the bushes over a short length of time causing issues, should I sand the mandrill shaft from time to time or this just one of things that happens?
Thanks for your help with these problems
Cheers

Hi Wolfbunny,
Assuming you are using the correct sized bushes for the mandrel in question they should never be stuck.
Perhaps you have been using Supa-Glue to glue your barrel into the blank and put it on to the mandrel before it has set and a little has stuck on to the bushes, or
you have applied Supa-Glue as a finish and slightly overshot the end of the wood.
It may be necessary to clean up your mandrel and ensure the bushes slide
on easily before making your next pen.
What part of the "Yarra Valley" are you located?

Stuck Bushes
Wolf bunny,
I suggest you rub a bit of wax over the mandrel before each session, this will help the bushes to slide freely even if CA glue has been used.
Regards,
Cam

This happened to me as I found that I was over tightening the screw on the mandrill. Also part of this I was putting a lot of force from the tail stock end, thus bending the mandrill and causing marks(rings) to appear.
I have been using a mandrill saver to prevent my over zealous tightening. I was getting some rings still appearing on the mandrill so a quick touch up with fine wet and dry sand paper fixed this.

TBC without bushing solves all mandrel and bushing problems.
Works great for me.

Turn Between Centres
Mind you if you are using too much CA then you will probably glue the tube to the centresNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Thanks for your help
Hi Allan
Not actually doing pens with my mandrill! and no CA glue involved, but the sizing will check this out today.
I'm near Yarra Junction, do you think it may be a geographical problem? hehe
Hi Cam
Thanks for the tip will do this next time.
Hi Christos
I have this same problem as I'm turning very small items and use anywhere upto 6,8 or 10 spacers at a time.
I have to tighten a fair bit to be able to use the tools without the wood stopping, I'm not sure if there is a solution to this!
Whats a mandrill saver?
Hi Les
TBC's, again not sure if this will work with the live centres I have, what do you use? Are you able to share a link or photos of these?
Will incorporate the suggested ideas into my practice and hopefully the answers continue to come, thanks for your help guys.
Cheers

Bushes will stick to the mandrel if the mandrel is pitted. I have had the same problem. I have also found one mandrel that will only take certain bushes obviously because of faulty manufacture. If it is not glue getting onto the bushes then buy yourself another mandrel. They are cheap.

Bushing that are too tight and/or get stuck on the mandrel shaft is a result of the bushings getting knurled from over tightening the mandrel nut.
Ream out the inside of the bushings with a rat tailed file to remove the burs.

This is the center or mandrel saver
http://www.cwsonline.com.au/shop/ite...drel-saver-1mt
There are cheaper versions too.
Great idea as it provides even pressure to yiur mandrel. So long as your blanks and spacers are square it should be theoretically imposible to bend the shaft.
My advice is to rough your blanks beteeen centres first as square blanks are likely to slip on the mandrel.
