Bushing to Support Closed End Barrel
Because of the difficulty and many breakages that occured during my Closed end turning, I have made a SUPPORT BUSHING for Closed end Barrel.
Picture 1, shows the weakest point of the barrel and where the majority of breaks occur
Picture 2, shows the Support Bushing inserted into the barrel, then the closed end mandrel would go in, the fat end of the Support bushing cannot be too long because the closed end mandrel has a raised edge that needs to make contact with the tube so it doesn't flop around.
Picture 3 an actual shot of the Bushing.
It has helped mr tremendously, you still need care and sharp tools, I use the headstock to help support the blank while turning; BUT, at some point that support has to be withdrawn so you can turn the closed end.

Amos
Would you put up a picture of your closed end mandrel with the bushing? I have never looked into a closed end mandrel and am curious. What is the bushing made of?

Closed End Mandrel
Here is a picture of a closed end Mandrel, you can see the raised portions that end up inside the pen tube to hold it, with the support bushing in there, you also must make sure that the end closet to the nut , (I have put pointer marks on them,) makes contact for some support of the blank , or it will wobble every where. Thanks Amos. I think I get it now.
The bushing supports the little bit of blank, in the unsupported drilled area, just past the end of the brass tube, beyond the reach of the mandrel. Keeps it from breaking at the end of the brass tube. Right?
