My first Butterfly
I've done a half one, but not the 4 leaf. Made from Swamp Mahogany and my mistery white wood (bonewood?). Still have to get my sanding technique right, the layers aren't even, but close enough.

Did you quarter the blank lengthwise? In the pic it looks like you went thirds... something I've considered but put in the 'too hard' basket for now.

I just picked an angle that looked right
Have a look at Purplehearts cue making WIP. Basically I took slices off the end on all four sides at the end of the blank so that I ended up with a four sided pyramid type point. I then added a slice on each side, one at a time and sanding off between, so that I have a blank with a different coloured four sided point. You then start again with a different colour, in my case, the same as the blank. Then repeat again with the different colour. Then finish with larger wedges on the four sides, so you end up with your square blank again.
I cut off square at the end of the last cone, that way you can see exactly where the centre is. Hope this makes sense, it is pretty time consuming and uses heaps if timber. My slices were around 2mm thick, but each time I tried to sand down to around 1mm. In reality (I was sanding on an inverted belt sander) I got 0mm to 1mm
I will try again one day with 1mm slices to start with, but I need to get the surface right first. A dark sider would plane it down, but I don't use many tools you don't plug in
Next one to try is your zig zag style.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new
