Another Butterfly
Since I stuffed up the spider pen’s butterfly, I thought I would give the butterfly another try. I went a bit crazy with the CA and made a butterfly with 7 layers of 0.5mm shims cut on my band saw. At 0.5mm I found I could trim the shims with a sharp Stanley knife, after gluing them on, then just sand the edges. Even with CA, cutting the shims, sanding and the 32 glue ups took most of the day. To ensure I didn’t stuff it all up with drilling the hole for the sleeve, I rough turned it first, then drilled it in the lathe.
The original blank is Purpleheart, the shims are Bonewood (my mystery white wood), Ebony and Flooded Gum. The Bonewood is open grained and absorbed a lot of the CA so its layers look very rough. Apart from that, I’m very pleased with the result. It is finished with CA (to ensure it holds together), EEE then Glow.
The pen kit is a Polaris so it was all in one piece, I would have preferred a black Titanium kit, but the Polaris doesn’t come in it.

Neil, that is a darn good looking piece of pen, with lovely choice of colours and pattern.
I agree with you about the metal bits though - Yech.
From a lot of pens that i have seen on here, all to often the metal work overpowers the woodwork.
Still, i suppose that that is just another challenge to overcome and create something that meets the turners needs?

Lovely piece of turning, I agree about the kit though. I wonder if it'd be practical to use metal antiquing finishes on a pen kit? I reckon that if you could replace that "brushed aluminium" look [shudder] of Polaris kits with antiqued brass or old wrought iron... Hmmm... electroplating anyone? Your turning with an antiqued brass kit (and at least one of the knurled rings ground flat...) would, IMHO, be the bees' knees!
Oddly, the first thing I thought when I saw the pattern was "What now, Charlie Brown?" It just goes to show that lack of sleep is not conducive to coherent thought... Sorry. I'll crawl back to my rock now...

Love the woodwork!!! Don't particulary like the kit itself, but that certainly doesn't detract from the fantastic slice and dice job.

I like the work and the kit. I am debating right now weather to order polaris or gemini kits to show wood off better.
Great job on the glue up keep at itI have done so much for so long with so little I can now do almost anything with nothing!
