Default My first CA finished pens

    Hi All

I've been making the occasional pen for about 8 months now and simply finishing them with hut wax or shellawax. While this is simple and quick I was always a bit envious of the gloss finish a lot of you get. I did try doing a lacquer finish on a couple with excellent results however that is time consuming and a bit of a pain in the proverbial.

I was a bit concerned about the fumes from the CA finish but finally gave it a go tonight and I've got to say I'm sold. I must say a big thanks to DJ for his most excellent tutorial on doing the CA finish. Followed it almost to the letter and had no problems whatsoever.

So her are my first 3 pens with the CA finish. Left to right is Fiddlewood on a gold and gunmetal sierra, Olive on a gold and gunmetal executive sierra and European Walnut on a chrome and gunmetal executive sierra. All the kits were from timberbits. All three have been sanded to 800, 20 coats of thin CA, Micromesh to 12000, brasso and then a final coat of huts ultragloss. Sounds like a lot of work but the finishing only took about 20 minutes for each pen.

Thanks for looking and feel free to offer constructive criticism. I will appologise in advance for the lousy photos but it's late (at least that's my excuse)

    cheers
    WH

    Hi WH.

Great looking pens you have there. You managed to get a great high gloss finish on the pens.

The beauty with the Sierras is that you can make 2 at a time. That brings the 20mins down to 10mins per pen.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Very nice well done
I'm sure my first CA finish did not look that good
To help with the fumes get a fan to blow across your face so fresh air is always getting to you.

    Default The CA Finish.

    Hi wood hacker,
Now I think I've got this right. Some Werribee Boys, who do Pens, use a Finish of 1 Drop of Boiled Linseed Oil & 1 Drop on CA on a Tissue or the better ones from the Coffee Shop.
Boy, you should see the Finish they can get. Worth a try, & only takes Seconds.
    Regards,
    issatree.

This is quite a popular method of finishing pens and if you want to finish a pen in a few minutes, this is the way to go. The timber you use pretty much dictates how good a finish you can achieve but guess that is true of most finishes.
    Reality is no background music.
