Default I just can't wait 'til the weekend

Well Kanga got his new lathe today so I have mine all to myself again. It is very frustrating watching someone turn and not be able to get in and do it yourself but that problem is fixed now.
I didn't attempt another Mont Blanc, I'll study that one a bit more before I attempt again. I did do a straight one with a cap thingy I only know it as a pen2. Bit of a panic when I had to dremel the notch bit for the clip, the old eyes aren't as good as they used to be.
The wood is Beef Wood. I don't know what it is about the pen, I reckon it looks unfinished on the cap with that raw edge.
Kanga is still trying the Mont Blanc, he turned one out of Native Olive and has asked me to post his pic as well.

YOur pen 2 is better than mine. i could not get that cap flush. So give yourself a pat on the back. I bet Kanga happy to have his own toy to talk to and have fun with.

I've always called them purse pens. 'Tis not their proper name, just mine.

I agree with you about the finish of the cap, it'd look more finished if the centreband was "split" so that one bead attached to the end of the cap. 'Tis only a minor detail and your pen looks good as it is (the beefwood came up a real treat!) but it's the minor details that make the difference between good and great.

Give Kanga a pat on the back too.

I have made a couple of these. I agree that they look unfinished so I have added a band on the end of the cap. The pic is actually a pen 3 ie fountain pen version but the same on the outside. It is NG rosewood and is the pen in my pocket every day and used constantly at work. It is starting to produce that nice used look to it.

Good thinking. I'd still prefer 'twas done at the kit level but we do what we can, eh?

'Tis a nice, small and crisp bead too, well matched to the centreband size. That's a pen worth showing off.

'Twas an early weekend for this li'l black duck.

First thing this morning, I spent a while having a play on the lathe. No penkits to play with, so I settled for fiddling with scent applicators. Apologies for the photos, but [insert usual excuses here]. The kit's are a gold finish which doesn't show well in the light (it's drizzling here now! ) but the timber colours have come up fairly accurately, even if the blackwood's not showing it's chatoyance. That never shows properly in my photos anyway. Except for the Pink Ivory, which is really, really, REALLY pink, practically a fluoro colour. (I've kept the Pink Ivory shavings & dust for future use as a crack filler... along with my Ebony, Osage Orange and Amarillo. Lovely colours!

From top to bottom: Pittosperum (yet again), Tas Blackwood & River Redgum, while the lace bobbin is Pink Ivory. 2nd pic shows the lid off one of the applicators, just for those who don't know what a scent applicator is. (I bet that doesn't include any of our womenfolk! )

No harder than an ordinary slimline.

The tube is a tiny fraction wider than a slimline pen (an 8mm hole in the blank) but I turn it on the normal mandrel and use small bits of paper to pack out the tube. I don't know if any bushes are available for it, I simply use a set of verniers and turn the ends down to about 9.5mm, then get creative on the rest.

Most people turn them "flat" or "cigar shaped," the same as a slimline, but I've grown bored with those shapes...

Yes. I'm pretty sure I sourced mine through Carbatec, but I won't swear to it, they've been sitting on my shelf for a long time now. I also have some atomisers I bought at the same time... I might turn one of them this weekend.

I just had a look to see if Jim carries them but I couldn't find them on his site. It won't hurt to ask him, just the same... and having used mine (I only had 4, so I've just one kit left) I should look at buying some more too.

Gotta get some penkits first, though.

They look good Skew, not really a beer mans project but all very creative just the same. I really liked that pink Ivory, I have one that I have been saving...Maybe make something nice for my daughters wedding to sign her life away with.

Toni yes I am glad I don't have to share anymore it's a real pain. As for the weekend I have spent the last few hours doing a job application so it really wont start for me 'till tomorrowday.

Terry I have a hard enough time getting my Mont Blancs around the right way without making fancy little beads that close to the edge, it looks good but I have to agree with Skew a split center band would be the way to go.

Thanks all the rest for the comments I just aspire to be as good as you all one day.

it will happen faster than you think. I have only been turning since May. So it happens fast you learn and improve with each one. You are already, so what if one was upside down or the dremel nearly caused an accident. you are learning and having fun. And with all thing practis makes perfect. So keep practising, that my excuse and I am sticking to it.
    bye
