    Default A few more Classics

The darker ones are Coolabah Burl finished with CA, EEE then Glow. I got the small burl offcut for $4 at a woodshow down south. Only small, but enough for 6 pens.

The other is Scribbly Gum that had leaves on just a week ago. Zapped on the microwave to dry it. It is finished with 6 coats of Hard Shellac (trying to darken), EEE then Glow. They are real sap lines too, no resin in this one.

    Cheers

The burl really sets that kit off, doesn't it?

I like the Scribbly too, but it suffers in comparison to the burl. A shade darker would be nice, wouldn't it? Methinks I'd put 'em at opposite ends of my display case with a few other varieties in-between, so the Scribbly is judged on its' own merits.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Spot on Skew, the burl is my favourite. Funny though, I took them to work, and the first 3 people I showed them to preferred the scribbly gum

Beautiful work and beautiful wood. The scribbly is more subtle than the in your eye loveliess of the burl. But they are both grand.

Can you explain the microwave process? How long, settings, etc.

There are a few posts on zapping your wood in the microwave, try a search. My method is a bit rough, others use moisture meters etc. It also depends on what wood you have, some have entrapped moisture that love to blow up if you turn it to steam:eek: .

With mine I put 4 in a flattened plastic zip lock bag and zap for 1 minute on high, take out and wipe with paper towel, then leave for 30mins. Then repeat but zap for 40, again but 30, then keep repeating at 20 a few more times and she's done. The time generally is just enough to expand the bag without blowing it open.

If your wood blows up, you zapped it too much . The only dissadvantage is that if your timber normally gets darker with natural drying, you won't get it in the microwave.

    Hope this helps.
