Click Action Kits
Hey There,
I have a client that wants some pens made and has stipulated that they must be click action. I refuse to use the Pen # 9 from Carbatec because they just don't handle everyday use for very long (IMHO). I have made heaps of Longwood clicks and have had mixed results, (i thought that they were Bullet proof, but No). I have made a few Sierra Clicks, but again they don't feel good enough (The click action isn't man enough) so can anyone help????
The Client is a good customer, and I know that they are always right, but how do you tell them that they are asking a bit much?? I don't need any issues with products that are out of my control.
Your Advice is much appreciated.

I can appreciate your problem, I dont make many click pens for the same reason.
There was a discussion recently on the IAP about some better quality clicks. I cant remember what they were exactly, maybe it was the Vertex, are they a click pen ?
I wish the manufacturers would come up with some decent ones, surely its not too hard. I sell $2 plastic click pens in my shop that work forever ( or at least until the ink runs out anyway )

I have made a few of the vertex clicks ,they are different from most I have seen ,when you press in they stay in , and come back out when you click again , very quiet as well , one thing with all the clicks is they are plastic components so I guess longevity is not a strong point with them . The sierra type clicks seem to rattle a bit ,and can be a bit annoying I think. No Idea which is the best as we take these kits on face value and hope they are well made and long lasting ,some things we have no control over at all , cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

You can improve upon the feel of Sierra click by replacing the refill with one of the uni-ball 207 refills if they are sold in Australia. The refill is longer and the extra length means you can leave out the metal extension with no other changes. Rattle is gone, clicks a little nicer, the gel ink is nicer to write with, and if you are selling you can pitch the anti check washing feature of the uni-ball 207. Downside is you end up with a lot of refills but you can always include them with the Sierra twists.

I have only made 1 click pen and that was a sierra and it seems to be working fine.
I think you just need to make your client aware that they are not the best but if they want them you will make them. As long as the client know what he is buying there is no come back.
Good luckCheers Rum Pig

The Sierra click may rattle a bit, but it does last. I'm using one on a daily basis that is now more than three years old. Its the only click pen that I've tried that I would recommend at this stage.

The Longwood that Gary Pye sells is a good click pen. The only problem with it is you have to drill the blank in the lathe and buy the extra long drill bit from Gary because you need about 120 mm of travel in the quill to drill it on the drill press so you need a drill chuck for the lathe and a scroll chuck with long jaws to hold the blank.
