Click Action Pens
Hey there,
Did a couple of click action pens this arvo, 1st is American Cherry, 2nd is European Birch (thats what the bloke who gave it to me called it) has a really dark feature through it, tried to show this with a couple of extra pics, sanded to 1000 wet and dry and Hutt wax. Going to Laser engrave these for display purposes hopefully. Comments welcome.

Couple of nice pens there, looks like you might have overturned the Birch a little on the nib end. I know a guy who knows a guy who does laser engraving over west. The one that I know is a member in here so let me know if you want his details
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Nice little collection Hazza.
Agree with Corbs though, looks like some overturning. One way to avoid this is to stop and check as you are getting close to size. I stop a whisker proud and sand back to the bushes.
If you have used your bushes for a while they may be slightly undersized from brushes with the chisel and sandpaper.Check 'em out and replace if needed, they are cheap enough.

Thanks Guys,
Yes a little bit of an OOOOps, thats what you get when trying to go too quick, I had a fellow coming over to see the different timbers, and I rushed the Birch one, he was still impressed enough to order 10, so I promise to do better next 100 times. I know what you are saying about bushes, David at Timberbits says that after 5 pens replace bushes anyway. I should have some kits here anyday now and will have some flash ones up soon. Thanks again.

European birch is somewhat of a generic term...what you have looks like a piece of baltic birch...the dark streak is typical of early growth baltic birch, which is harvested mainly for cabinet veneer grade plywood...close to the bark or maybe where a branch was forming.

Hey Russell,
Great Idea having a set of sacraficial bushes, i have a project where I have to make a heap of pens and the once they are sanded take them to a bloke who is going to laser engrave them and then I have to Bring them home and finish them and then assemble, so a couple of sets of 'finishing bushes' might be just the answer, I have a few ideas about the logistics, and am trying to devise a way of finishing off the lathe,(So she has time to turn up some more product ) Have to work that one out Thursday, we are gluing up a heap of blanks (Thanks Dave Timberbits, parcel arrived Yesterday)Tonight and I will be giving SWMBO a lesson in Turning and see if she likes it, then I will have to set up Pops old lathe if she does.
