    Default Long Click and BOW

Unusually warm weather equals garage time on the lathe and I had a busy Christmas time making pens and thought I was done when I had another request for a "Really nice piece of BOW" on one of the Fisher of Men pen kits.

Two problems ... I'm out of the pen kits and I'm out of BOW pen blanks.

The wife to the rescue ... she points out to me a a box that says "BOW Burls and Spalts".

I show her that these are 1" - 1 1/2" pieces for fishing rod grips/seats that I haven't used yet. She simply looks me in the eye and said, "Sheila will like this piece" and walks out of the room. She had handed me one of my 1"+ blanks and this piece has cracks and fissures and is spalted.

I decided to use one of my favorite kits, the Long Click from Laulauwoods in Gold TI.

The spalted areas busted out three times while turning this and I decided to throw a new finish into the equation plus use my 4 rpm rod drying rotisserie.

Finish is applied using 1/4" wide strips of a foam brush I cut up.

After two coats I used some Plastix to get the dust bunnies off.

    Things learned from this were:

    1) Wife's friend has more options than I do for selecting who/what/where gets one of my pieces of timber.
    2) The Defthane finish took over 24 hours to dry under my hot box which hovered at 90ºF
    3) Rod Rotisserie worked great and I will use this again instead of 'dipping'.
    3) Long Click pens do not like the Fisher Space Pen Refills.

Here all this time I thought this was a USA woman thing ... you mean this phenomenon has transcended all the way there?

We had our sons family from Montana up for the holidays and the wife was sleeping on the bed that folds out from the couch.

She tripped over the dog and broke two toes on her right foot. She can't catch me at the moment

Thank you John ... it is really pretty spectacular piece of timber.

It's how I dry my fly rod thread wraps when I apply the epoxy.

I use these little motors and they rotate the rod or pen in this case until the finish is dry and it helps with self leveling.

I get the dowels from the craft store and I use a rubber band to center the piece.

Motor on left is a 6 rpm and the one on the right is a 29rpm which I'm going to experiment with applying the epoxy to the wraps and hopefully it will give a nice sharp clean line.

What a bloody brilliant idea Rhos. Genius never ceases to amaze me. Do you think it would work with Nitrocellulose dip? If so can you post the plans for it?

    Great work!

    Thanks Greg ...

Even though we speak the same language I've learned that we don't use the same dictionary. I have no idea what Nitrocellulose dip is. Lacquer by chance and if so, yes it will work.
