From Cob to Pen
I have just finished 3 days at the Bundaberg Regional Show as a steward for the general wood working and wood turning. There was some good work on display and the entries were worthy of their wins. On the second day I walked to machinery hill where there was a display of old machines. There was a machine where a guy was throwing in corn cobs and de-corning the cobs. I asked if I could have some and when he asked why, I told him to make pens from them, he had a dis-believing look on his face. He was amazed to have a pen made from the corn he had grown and dried and now i have a never ending supply on cobs The cob photo a bit blurry the pen i just had to do a point and shoot because it was at the show. See what you think of the pen.
Cheers
Darren

Darren, Greetings and salutations my mate, the blank No 1 may never make anything but No 2 blank came up well.
Had a blue with a pushy person in America via Pay Pal and I ended up in dispute and getting my money back and then sending it again to the correct address I added a letter in the name and the other person had the same name with one double instead of single, the same @ company and latched onto it. I claimed Items not received anyhow this is why I even mention this is cause the head office for Paypal guy I spoke with is in the Corn Capital of America and he was amazed pens could be made with corn cobs.
Very happy to see you posting really straight pen in other words turned B to B as you used to say and it suits this pen fine. Fit and all your standard has not diminished. Glad you put in time at the Show as a Steward in the past I remember your many ground breaking first prizes. Look forward to more from you.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

Yes Peter still doing my straight pens , still like the classic clean lines of B2B turning, guess I like the more classical shape of pens. In saying that if a client wants lumps and bumps on their pens then that is what they get, but I am glad they are hardly asked for I was happy with the cob, turned totally un-stabilized and just a CA finish.
Now I have corn cobs that need stabilizing so it might mean a stabilizing out fit is on the cards to be bought

G'day Darren,
As the others have said, a very nice pen. Can you tell me please what B2B is?
I am still a newbie and am a tad

Corn cob turned out well Darren . Nice to have a supplier, remember they dye well too. Once you go down the stabilizing path, and casting of course, it's as addictive as pen making you know .
I eat plenty of corn on the cob each summer. I scrape any left-over kernels off, throw the used cobs in the freezer, then next year they are ready to go as pen blanks .
Good to see you posting again.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Hi Neil,
And to all others thank you for the kind words, I was happy with the way the cob turned. I didn't have to use any CA to stabilize it and got to the finishing stage which was good. Yes I hope the gentleman holds good to his word, he is old school and it was a shake of the hand deal, so I will be getting some good supplies.
I have some of the Ubeaut dyes so will play with that next time, just have to get my lathe back home and get serious again.
Good to be back mate.
Cheers
Darren
