Default Cocobola in a stretch roller

Cocobola in a Rhodium stretch roller ball.

The finish is Ubeaut glow shellawax and hut wax stick. I tried other finishes but could not get them to set on the blank successfully.

WOP on poly would not set even with a seal of CA. CA kept leaving white marks, frustrating as the blank has terrific feature grain and colour.

    Nice work, Sam, looks good!

Lovely piece of timber. Interesting that WOP wouldnt set on the cocobollo.

I've done quite a few pieces of cocobollo with rustin's with no problem, also had success with DO, for what it's worth...

Nice kit, too, looks like it would be good for showing off long sections of grain.

Hello Sam, it is a good looking pen, Cocobolo has beautiful feautures, pity that couldn't be sealed with Rustins or CA, Amos

    Default Sam

I like the pen and finish as they are, Cocobolo can be very mysterious this way.

Have not said much about the castings etc looking forward to seeing you with Pat when you come to Canberra.

    Regards to you both Peter.

    Very nice Sam!
Cocobolo can be frustrating at times.
I soak the turned and sanded blank in French Polish over night and then let dry for 24 hours. Rub down with fine steel wool, apply 2 coats of Med CA, rub down with fine steel wool and then I apply Minwax poly with no problems with it drying.

Nice looking pen Sam. What would cause the problems with the Rustins etc??

Great looking pen, Sam. Nice kit too. Cocobolo can be an oily timber. Sounds like your piece is specially oilly. You managed to buff a lovely sheen on it though.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Looks good to me .. cocobolo often doesn't need any coating, it takes a nice sheen
on it's own because of the high oil content.
But if you want to put a finish on it, you need a barrier coat of some kind.. something
that will stick to an oil AND stick to the finish you plan to use. Shellac is good for
that; it will stick to most anything.

Still .. looks great as it is

Thanks all for the tips etc. This piece was extremely oily and so that answers your question Jenny it the oil content of the timber.

On another forum they have suggested wiping it with DNA or meths first to dry the oil.

Looking at the pen today I am happy with the natural sheen of the timber and no plastic look.

I've also used acetone and other paint thinners... it depends on what's at hand.

Basically any solvent that evaporates off rapidly will work, so you can apply the first finish coat quickly before the oils rise to the surface again.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
