Hi,
I have just started out with pen turning and am interested in trying this method of finishing.
I was wondering if anybody in Australia that is using this method at the moment could give me an idea of what brand of lacquer they are using and the best place to get it from.
I went into Bunnings and also one of my local Mitre 10 stores, but either I don't know what I'm looking for or they don't have it. When I asked for furniture lacquer I was given this blank look by their staff and asked what I wanted it for. When I told them to lacquer wood, they said they don't think they sell anything like that. They both sold lacquer thinners, just not lacquer.
I see mentioned something about automotive lacquer, am I better off trying supercheap auto or somewhere like that?
I'm in Brisbane.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
-Gavin

Hi Gavin
I have used this method to finish pens. See here.
As I mentioned in another thread like you I went to Bunnings and encountered the same blank looks. I ended getting some from an Automotive Paint supplier. They only had a four litre tin so should last me the rest of my life.
They actually had furniture lacquer but I don't think it matters whether it's Automotive or Furniture lacquer according to edblysards post.
Added Comment: BTW the brand I bought was Pylon. http://www.pylon.com.au/singlePack.htmlLast edited by Barry_White; 2nd June 2009 at 05:26 PM. Reason: Added Comment

Gavin,
As Bazza says, it dosent matter what lacquer you use, as long as it is a good quality one.
I happened to use the automotive lacquer because I had a bunch of it left over from a automobil painting project...the last few pens I have finished were done with Watco funiture lacquer....
Wonder why it is hard to find for you guys?

Another thought.
I would like to save this thread for quick reference.
Can someone explain a easy way that this can be done.
