    Default Coolabah Question

    Hi All

I am working on a coolabah blank to go into a Sierra. I have shaped it and sanded to 400grit then with micro mesh down to 12000grit then hit it with the shellowax. I am happy with the blanks appearance but it does have a few tiny cracks in the wood. Do i need to fill this with CA and wood dust or will coating it with CA in the finishing process fill this time gaps, or do i just leave the natural cracks in the wood remain at large?

While I am here do I need to apply a CA finish at all? I am happy with the shine and smoothness, does CA just protect that or will it enhance the finish more?

    Thanks

No pics, but assume you are talking about burl. Yes, finishing with CA will cover most of those little cracks and imperfections you get in burl, provided you use enough layers. I use 2 thin CA layers, then at least 6 thick CA (thin layers), for best results. I would also give the shellowax finish a sand again with 1200 grit to ensure good bond.

Yes a CA finish will fill them. Make sure you sand the blank more however, as the CA will build a layer around 1/4mm and your blank is already slightly oversized. Only sand to 1200 max, not micromesh before the CA finish, as you will not see the difference. I ensure my CA finish is pretty smooth with 0000 steel wool before using the micromesh then plastic polish finish.

You could also accent before you get too close to your finished sizes using black epoxy on those deeper pronounced features, I have ground in a Coffee Grinder Ebony with CA and had success as well. Certainly at your present stage use CA on those many areas and sand level after using a skew on the flat carefully to get back to your surface. Works for me.
