Sorry Russell, seeing you asked, neither of those photos do it for me. You're right the second out of focus pen is very distracting, whether in the foreground or the background.

But I also find the overall lighting effect to dark, not helped by the fairly dark background.

The cropping is also very close, an effect that other people use as well, but I don't think it really works for pens. They are such a straight and elongated subject, that cropping them that closely with the subject lined up with the edges of the picture, that there is a distinct loss of perspective.

I agree neither of the photos works. I would like to see a full shot of the black and silver. How did you make that type of blank if you don't mind me asking??? That looks pretty cool from what I can see.

It's pour a layer of black, pour a squiggle of contrast, another layer of black, another squiggle of contrast etc etc.

Oh sorry I should have explained. The old "white sinks" problem again - it's a little lopsided - lots of swirls on the side of the pen showing, not a lot of the other. I didn't take pictures of the other side.

I would also have a preferred a little more contrast that's more obvious from further away, but with slimlines & streamlines, getting detail is hard as you don't have much surface area to work with. I'm sure the person who requested it will be happy.
