Darren,
Sanding to 12000# then applying a finish is not a good idea. Finishes actually need something to key to, otherwise they are just a "sleve" and become susceptible to damage from even minor knocks.
I found out the hard way using MinWax Wipe on Poly on a laminated lidded box entry into AWTEX a couple of years ago. It was sanded to 1800 or 2000 with a velcro backed paper I got wit some Astradot. When I used a jamb chuck with "low tack" masking tape as extra security, the tape pulled of a significant amount of the finish.
As this one is probably a 2nd without much chance of redemption just try the old painters trick of making a small cut or cuts in the finish and use some std masking tape to test if it will lift away from the timber.
